BIG RAPIDS, Michigan - The Bowling Green State University hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision Saturday night to Ferris State. With the loss the Falcons fall to 0-4-1, 0-2-1 CCHA, while the Bulldogs improve to 2-1-2, 1-0-2 CCHA.
"We are not getting enough production out of our team right now," said head coach Scott Paluch. "We just couldn't finish off plays. They came at us hard early, but we handled that. From that point on we played extremely well."
The Orange and Brown got off to a slow start to open Saturday night's action, spotting the Bulldogs an early 2-0 advantage after goals by Matt Stefanishion and Eric Vesely late in the opening stanza.
The Bulldogs out shot BGSU 11-7 in the first period.
BGSU entered the second period with much more life, clawing to within one following Mike Falk's third goal of the season. Falk was able to put the puck past FSU's Mitch O'Keefe after the Falcons caught the Bulldogs in the middle of a line change. Sophomore Michael Hodgson and junior Rich Meloche assisted on the goal.
Still trailing 2-1 entering the third, the Bowling Green offense continued to show life, out shooting FSU 11-5 in the third. Midway through the final period BGSU earned a 5-on-3 advantage, but all four shot attempts were pushed wide by O'Keefe.
For the night O'Keefe stopped 27-of-28 Falcon shots, while senior Jon Horrell continued his strong play, turning aside 22-of-24 Bulldog shots. He also helped the Falcons' penalty kill hold FSU scoreless on three attempts. Bowling Green was 0-for-6 on the power play.
"Goal scoring...it is a lot of confidence, said Paluch. "Four of the five games we have been creating a lot of chances, but not a lot to show for it. One of the things that happen when you are struggling to score goals, you will make a riskier pass and try to do to much, and the transition game gave Ferris some good chances. All-in all our game was extremely good for a road game. We just have to get some confidence and start scoring some goals."
On the slate next for the Falcons will be a pair of CCHA home games with Nebraska-Omaha (Nov. 4-5). Both contests will begin at 7:05 p.m.
Notes
• The Bowling Green penalty kill has been stellar as of late, holding their opponents 1-for-11 in the last two contests. For the season they have surrendered only five power-play goals on 34 attempts (.853) this season.
• As good as the penalty kill has been, the power play has struggled as of late. Bowling Green had nine power play goals in their first three contests (9-of-33), but have not recorded a goal with the man advantage in their last 15 opportunities.
• Sophomores Jonathan Matsumoto and Alex Foster both had point streaks snapped on Saturday night. Matsumoto had an eight game streak snapped, while Foster had scored a point in six straight games. Both streaks included two games from last season.
• In nine career games versus Ferris State senior Mike Falk has recorded seven points (5g, 2a).
• Sophomore Michael Hodgson recorded his first point of the season.
• In three of the five games this season BGSU has out shot their opponent. They held a 47-23 advantage to open the season with Merrimack. They also out shot Boston College 34-33 and Ferris State 28-24.
