OXFORD, Ohio -
The Bowling Green State University football team built a 29-point halftime lead en route to a 42-14 win over Miami University Tuesday night (Nov. 15) ... some notes and numbers from the game, which actually ended early Wednesday morning ...
With the win, the Falcons improve to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in Mid-American Conference play ... BGSU assumes sole possession of first place in the MAC's East Division, a game ahead of both MU (6-4, 4-3 MAC) and Akron (5-5, 4-3 MAC).
The win snapped Miami's six-game series winning streak ... BGSU's last win over the RedHawks was a 28-21 victory in the 1997 season ... the Falcons' last road win vs. MU came the year before, a 14-10 victory.
The Falcons' 28-point margin of victory was the team's biggest over Miami since 1984 ... that year, the Falcons posted a 41-10 victory against the then-Redskins.
BGSU finishes the road portion of the MAC schedule with a 4-0 record . . . the last time the Falcons were unbeaten in conference road games was 1994, when the Brown and Orange went 4-0 en route to an overall MAC mark of 7-1.
The Falcons held Miami to a total of negative-64 yards rushing, a school record by far ... the previous BGSU record for fewest rushing yards allowed was 18, against Ball State in 1992.
BGSU now has won 21 consecutive games when holding the opponent under 100 yards rushing.
The game, scheduled to begin at 7:01 p.m., actually kicked off at 9:33 p.m. due to a weather delay.
Senior Jelani Jordan intercepted a Josh Betts pass on the opening drive of the game ... the pick was Jordan's team-leading fifth of the season, but he wasn't finished.
That interception gave the Falcons the ball at Miami's 20-yard line ... five plays later, redshirt junior Omar Jacobs found senior Steve Sanders on a four-yard touchdown pass ... for Sanders, the reception was his 11th of the season and the 21st of his BG career.
Jacobs made his first appearance in a game since being injured in the first quarter of the Oct. 22 game vs. Western Michigan ... the QB missed the remainder of the WMU contest and all of the Akron (Oct. 29) and Kent State (Nov. 5) games ... on the night/morning, Jacobs was 21-of-34 through the air, for 178 yards and three TDs.
On Miami's ensuing drive, the Falcon defense held, and BG got two points when the snap sailed over the RedHawk punter's head on a fourth-down play ... the safety was the first of the season for the Falcons, and the first since last season's Ball State game.
Believe it or not, the next RedHawk punt resulted in the next Bowling Green safety ... MU punter Jacob Richardson dropped the snap, picked up the ball and ran out of the end zone, giving the Falcons an 11-0 lead with 6:40 remaining in the first quarter.
The Falcons' two safeties marked BG's most in a game since Oct. 19, 1996, in a 16-11 home loss to BSU ... but, BG wasn't finished with the two-pointers.
Late in the first quarter, Jacobs found Sean O'Drobinak on a six-yard TD pass on a third-and-goal play ... the toss was Jacobs' 22nd touchdown pass of the year, and the 67th of his career to extend his own school career mark.
BGSU's total of 18 points in the first quarter was the team's most in the opening quarter in a game this season.
The Falcons held the RedHawks to negative-10 yard of total offense in the first quarter, including minus-22 yards rushing ... offensively, BG had 77 first-quarter yards of total offense, and the Falcons were 5-of-6 on third-down conversions.
Brad Williams recorded a sack of Betts early in the second quarter ... for Williams, the QB sack was his second of the season ... just two plays later, Devon Parks and Terrel White got to Betts for a third-down sack.
Believe it or else, the Falcons got a third safety, with 10:05 left in the second quarter, as yet another high snap squirted through Richardson's hands and out of the end zone ... the total of three safeties set a school record, of course, and tied the NCAA single-game mark ... the record was set by Arizona State vs. Nebraska on Sept. 21, 1996, and matched by North Texas in a Sept. 27, 2003, game vs. La.-Lafayette.
With 8:45 remaining in the second quarter, on the ensuing drive after the third safety, senior Charles Sharon caught a seven-yard pass from Jacobs ... the reception was number 216 in Sharon's career, breaking the school record ... Sharon had entered Tuesday/Wednesday's game tied with Cole Magner (215 from 2001-04) for the BGSU record in career receptions.
On Miami's next drive, Jordan intercepted another Betts pass ... the pick gave Jordan his third multiple-interception game of the year ... the pick was Jordan's sixth of the year and the 10th of his Falcon career.
With 2:56 left in the first half, senior Teddy Piepkow grabbed his first interception of the season, picking off Betts and returning the ball 15 yards ... the pick was the third of Piepkow's career.
With 43.9 seconds left in the first half, Joe Timchenko booted a 32-yard field goal ... the FG was his second of the season and the third of his Falcon career ... he had a 40-yarder in the 2004 game vs. Southeast Missouri State, on his first play as a Falcon, and converted a 27-yard kick in the Kent State game this season.
On the ensuing kickoff, Tim Arnold forced Ryan Redd to fumble, with Diyral Briggs recovering the ball at the RedHawks' 29-yard line with 35.5 seconds left ... a Sanders reverse picked up nine yards, and after a BG timeout, Jacobs threaded a 20-yard pass to Sanders in the corner of the end zone with just 19.6 seconds left in the half ... the point-after try was wide, but the Falcons led, 29-0 at the intermission.
The Falcons held Miami to minus-43 yards rushing and negative-10 yards of total offense in the first half.
Sharon opened the second half by returning the kickoff for 58 yards, a career long.
With just over 13 minutes left in the third quarter, a Jimmy Murray carry put the RedHawks into positive yardage for total offense for the game ... the eight-yard run gave the hosts a total of six yards in the contest to that point.
White blew up a third-and-10 play for the RedHawks in BG territory early in the third quarter, bowling over Betts for a 10-yard loss ... that gave him one-and-a-half sacks on the night/morning and three for the year.
After midnight, another sack of Betts, late in the third quarter, came from Parks and resulted in a fumble, which was recovered by the RedHawks ... that gave Parks, like White, one-and-a-half sacks on the night, and increased his season total to three-and-a-half.
Through three quarters, the RedHawks had 64 yards of total offense, but negative-53 yards on the ground.
Miami's punt-team woes continued, as with 11:21 left in the game, a snap went over Richardson's head, with freshman Antonio Smith recovering the ball at the RedHawks' four-yard line ... the play went for a loss of 41 yards, putting Miami's rushing total at negative-92 yards for the night to that point.
Two plays later, freshman Corey Partridge completed a five-yard touchdown pass to O'Drobinak ... the pass was the first TD toss of Partridge's career, while O'Drobinak recorded the first two-TD game of his career ... for O'Drobinak, the TD catch was his fourth, both this year and in his BG tenure.
Senior B.J. Lane broke an 18-yard TD run with 7:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, giving the Falcons a 42-7 lead ... the touchdown was Lane's ninth on the ground this season and the 13th rushing score of his BG career.
With 5:47 left in the game, senior Mike Crumpler intercepted Betts, his first pick of the season and the second of his career ... then, with 33.2 seconds on the clock, freshman Kenny Lewis recorded his first career interception, picking off Betts in the end zone ... the Falcons' total of five interceptions marked a season high, topping the total of three picks in the win over Temple.
The game ended at 12:54 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday.
