RADIO: WBGU-FM (88.1) - Paul Braverman
SERIES: IU leads, 2-0
LAST MEETING: at Indiana 59, BGSU 47 (Dec. 2, 1983)
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, after Friday's 11-point win over IUPUI, will take on host Indiana University in the championship game of the Hampton Inn Classic Saturday (Nov. 26) ... the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller will meet the Hoosiers in Saturday's second contest at Assembly Hall (17,456), as IUPUI will face Youngstown State University in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. ... BGSU has not won an in-season tournament championship since December of 1988.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE
The Falcons are off to a 3-0 start this season ... believe it or not, that marks BG's best start in eight years, since the 1997-98 team also won three consecutive games to begin the year ... after the '97-98 campaign, each of the next seven BGSU squads started the season at 1-1 ... no Falcon team has started the year with four consecutive wins since the 1991-92 Falcons began the year at 5-0 en route to a 24-5 record ... side note: the 1997-98 team, after those three consecutive wins to begin the year, suffered a 71-67 loss to Syracuse in the team's second of three games at the UCF Turkey Shootout in Orlando, Fla. (Nov. 29, 1997) ... that SU team featured a young assistant coach named Curt Miller.
HONEGGER AT HOME IN HOOSIER STATE
Junior Liz Honegger has experienced a great deal of success in the Falcons' last three trips to her home state ... Honegger, a native of Lafayette, Ind., has posted the three highest scoring totals of her BGSU career in the team's last three visits to the state of Indiana ... she scored a career-high 27 points in BGSU's win over IPFW last season (Nov. 19, 2004), then matched that total in the Falcons' win at Ball State (Feb. 8, 2005) ... her 25-point game yesterday marked the third time in her career - all in Indiana - that Honegger had scored at least 25 points in a game.
(IN-SEASON) TOURNEY TIME
It has been quite a while since the Falcons have won a regular-season tournament ... BGSU went 1-1 at each of last year's two in-season tourneys, the Brown Classic (Providence, R.I.) and the Lobo Shootout (Albuquerque, N.M.) ... in the 2003-04 campaign, the Falcons posted a 2-0 record in the Comfort Suites Classic, picking up wins over host Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State ... that marks the only time BGSU has gone undefeated in an in-season tourney setting in the last 16 seasons ... on Dec. 2-3, 1988, the Brown and Orange downed Villanova and Iowa State to win the Illini Classic ... that 1988 tourney is the last time the Falcons have won an in-season championship game (the EKU Comfort Suites Classic featured predetermined matchups on each day, with Georgia, the fourth team in the classic, matching the Falcons' 2-0 mark) ... since the Illini Classic, BGSU teams have gone 1-1 in 18 different in-season tournaments, 2-1 in one tourney and 0-2 three times, in addition to the 2-0 record at EKU ... it should be noted, however, that the Falcons have won the MAC Tournament title four times during that span, including in 2005.
FALCONS AND HOOSIERS
The Falcons are 0-2 all-time against IU, with both setbacks coming in in-season tournaments in Bloomington ... Saturday's meeting between the Falcons and Hoosiers will be the first in 23 years ... host IU posted a 51-41 win in the Indiana Invitational on Jan. 4, 1980, then downed the Falcons, 59-47, in the Converse Classic on Dec. 2, 1983.
SISTER ACT
Falcon junior Liz Honegger, as mentioned earlier, is a native of Lafayette, Ind. ... Honegger's older sister, Rachael, played basketball at IU, earning four letters from 1997-2001 ... Rachael Honegger scored a total of 667 points, and also had 413 rebounds, 237 assists and 179 steals in her career ... she started 71 career games for the Hoosiers.
THE DEFENSE NEVER RESTS
BGSU has held each of the season's first three opponents to 55 points or fewer ... the Falcons have limited those three foes to a combined field-goal percentage of 35.5 percent and an average of just 53.3 points per game.
MILESTONES
Several Falcons reached milestones in Friday's (Nov. 25) win over IUPUI ... junior Liz Honegger's second successful three-point field goal of the night gave her an even 100 in her career ... she ranks seventh on that BGSU career list ... fellow junior Ali Mann surpassed the 500-rebound total for her BGSU career, and now has 505 boards ... Honegger will be the next to reach that milestone, as she has 498 career rebounds entering the IU game.
UP NEXT
The Falcons will conclude the month of November with a Wednesday (Nov. 30) trip to the Motor City to take on Detroit ... then, the Brown and Orange will play the team's lone home game in a span of over a month, hosting Duquesne on Dec. 6.
