CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Bowling Green State University softball team struggled offensively for the second-straight day, and the result was a pair of losses in Saturday (Feb. 26) action at the Frost Classic. The Falcons fell to Tennessee Tech, 5-1, and Bradley, 7-2.
BGSU, now 0-4 on the young season, got on the board quickly in Saturday's first game, scoring a first-inning run vs. TTU. Sophomore Emmy Ramsey led off the game by reaching on a throwing error, and took second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Angie Ortiz. Another sophomore, Jeanine Baca, singled up the middle to move Ramsey to third. From there, she scored on a double-steal attempt, as Baca took second on a stolen base, and Ramsey came home on another Golden Eagle error.
That would be all the BG scoring in the game, however. TTU answered with three runs (two unearned) in the bottom of the first. After allowing a pair of singles, BG starter Lindsay Heimrich struck out the next two batters. But, a single by Stephanie Fischer plated Beth Boden and tied the score, and an error opened the door for two more runs in the frame.
The Golden Eagles would add to the lead with a pair of fifth-inning runs. After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, Katie Sutherland singled up the middle to score two runs.
That would be more than enough runs for TTU hurlers Sarah Street and Bonnie Bynum. Street allowed three hits and the lone BG run in four innings of work, while Bynum came on and threw three hitless innings of relief.
Heimrich allowed three earned runs in her complete-game effort, walking two and striking out seven.
At the plate, Fischer was 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the Golden Eagles, while the Falcons' three hits came from Baca, freshman Allison Vallas and senior Kristen Anderson.
In the second game of the day, BGSU again got on the board first, scoring two third-inning runs off Bradley pitcher Brittany Dehler. After the first two hitters were retired, Ortiz singled and Baca drew a walk. Then, Vallas singled to plate both runners. But, the Braves would respond in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, a hit batter and a single put two runners on base against Falcon freshman Emily Gouge. She got a grounder for the second out, but Brittany Mynsberge doubled home a pair of runs to tie the score, and a Joanna Pettit single gave BU the lead for good.
The Braves scored two more runs in the fourth inning, on three singles and a pair of walks, and added another on a fifth-inning homer by Trisha Kowalewski. In the sixth, Pettit doubled home Bethany Till to complete the scoring.
Dehler got the complete-game win with a four-hitter, walking three batters and whiffing four. Gouge allowed five runs and five hits in three-and-two-thirds innings, while junior Liz Vrabel got the final seven outs, giving up two runs on four hits.
Till and Pettit each had two hits and two RBI for the Braves.
The Falcons look to complete the Frost Classic on a successful note, playing Sunday (Feb. 27) games vs. Kentucky and Purdue.
