Bowling Green, Ohio - Freshman center Scott Vandermeer tied a school record with seven blocked shots and his effort allowed BGSU to pull away in the second half, as the Falcons (13-6 and 7-4 in the MAC) stopped Ohio (12-7, 7-5), 78-63 Monday evening in Anderson Arena.
Vandermeer, making his first start of the season, tied the school record of seven blocked shots set by Skip Howard against Toledo in 1973. BGSU began keeping records of blocked shots in 1972.
The Falcons trailed at halftime, 28-26, but a 25-6 run in the first 6:42 broke open the game. In that stretch, BGSU converted on six three-point opportunities in a row. Junior John Floyd made a layup and free throw with 19:07 left in the game to give BGSU the lead for good at 29-28. Senior John Reimold, Floyd, senior Josh Almanson and junior Steven Wright all buried long distance bombs, while junior Mawel Soler ended the triplefest with a layup and a free throw after being fouled as BGSU built a 44-33 lead with 15:32 left. Two more charity tosses by Soler and another three-pointer from Almanson gave the Falcons a 51-34 lead with 13:18 to go. The Bobcats, who came into the game with a four-game winning streak, could not get closer than a 13-point deficit in the final minute as BGSU avenged a 72-69 defeat at Ohio just nine days ago.
Vandermmer gave the Falcons a much needed lift defensively with five of his blocked shots coming in the second half. He also had six points and six rebounds.
The Falcons, who lead the MAC in free throw shooting, were nearly flawless from the line making 19 of 20 attempts. Floyd made all nine of his free throw shot and tied Almanson and Reimold for game-high honors with 16 points.
Almanson also made all seven of his field goal attempts.
BGSU will visit Toledo at 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 9.
