Bowling Green, Ohio - Alaska Fairbanks registered the second straight 6-3 victory over host Bowling Green on Saturday night, winning the Central Collegiate Hockey Association first-round playoff series at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Nanooks advance to the CCHA Super 6 at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday, March 17, while BGSU ends its season with a 16-16-4 record.
"I thought it was a hockey game that had a lot of strange twists and turns to it," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "I was proud of our guys on how we left it out there in the third period. It's certainly a disappointing weekend for our team and really for our seniors because they've done such a great job of turning us around and certainly deserved better.
"I think we needed a great start and got a great start. But a lot of credit goes to Alaska Fairbanks because they took advantage of opportunities. We were that one play away from tying the game up and taking advantage of one of those bounces."
UAF jumped out to a 2-0 lead late in the first period with goals from Aaron Lee (15:44) and Ryan Muspratt (19:08). BGSU's James Unger cut the deficit to one with a goal at 7:50 in the second period, thanks to an assist from Michael Hodgson. Kyle Greentree moved the Nanooks lead back to two goals, 3-1, when he scored at 16:17 of the second period.
That turned to a wild third period. BGSU outshot UAF 17-8 in the final period and got goals from freshman Mike Nesdill (2:02), his first of his career, and freshman Jonathan Matsumoto (12:55). However, UAF's Lee scored again at 11:00 of the third period and Curtis Fraser (18:58) and Jason Grinevitch (19:40, empty net) sealed the win for UAF.
UAF freshman goalie Wylie Rogers stopped 34 of 37 shots faced for the win. BGSU senior Jordan Sigalet, playing in his final collegiate game, stopped 27 shots.
The Falcons held a 37-33 shot advantage for the game and were 2-for-4 on the power play. UAF was 1-for-2 on the power play.
