LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Bowling Green State University softball team hung tough with the number-one team in the nation, but the University of Arizona prevailed, 3-0, over the Falcons late Saturday night (March 12). The game was part of the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 17-0 on the season, while dropping the Brown and Orange to 3-13 on the year.
The Falcons, with three freshmen in the starting lineup, had six hits vs. UA. Junior Lindsay Heimrich was 2-for-3 with a double, while sophomore Jeanine Baca had two hits in four trips to the plate. Soph Megan McPherson and freshman Allison Vallas each had a hit in the game.
The Wildcats had 10 hits off junior Liz Vrabel, with Crystal Farley and first-team All-American Caitlyn Lowe getting two apiece.
Arizona got two runs in the second inning, beginning with a leadoff single by Jackie Coburn. Coburn took second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a hit by Jennifer Martinez. With two outs, Allyson Von Leichtenstein doubled to bring Martinez across the plate.
BGSU put at least one runner on base in each of the first three innings, and threatened again in the fourth. In that inning, Vallas led off with a single off UA pitcher Taryne Mowatt, and Heimrich followed with a double that sent Vallas to third. But, Mowatt struck out the next two batters and got an inning-ending fly ball to rightfield.
In the Arizona fifth, Kristie Fox led off with a double, and took third on a Callista Balko single. Farley plated Fox with a two-out single that concluded the scoring.
Mowatt improved to 5-0 on the year with her six-hit shutout, walking one batter and striking out eight. Vrabel walked three batters and struck out one in her complete-game effort against the nation's top team. BGSU left seven runners on base to UA's eight.
The Falcons conclude action in Las Vegas with Sunday's (March 13) contest vs. Pacific, a team that currently receives votes in the national polls after being listed among the top 25 earlier this season.
