LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Senior Kristen Anderson's hitting, combined with junior Lindsay Heimrich's pitching, lifted the Bowling Green State University softball team to a 2-0 victory over the University of the Pacific Sunday afternoon (March 13). The game was the Falcons' final contest at the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 4-13 on the year, while the Tigers fall to 12-8. Pacific was ranked among the nation's top-25 teams earlier this season, and received votes in this week's national poll.
Anderson homered, doubled and drove in both of the game's runs, and Heimrich hurled a two-hit shutout for the victory.
Heimrich has allowed a total of one run and eight hits over her last three appearances, all complete-game wins. She spun a three-hit shutout in Friday's (March 11) 2-0 win over Minnesota, and allowed just one run and three hits in Saturday's (March 12) 6-1 victory against New Mexico State.
On Sunday, Heimrich walked two batters and struck out five in her seven innings of work. At the plate, she had two hits to match Anderson and junior Gina Rango for game honors.
Anderson was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and the two RBI. Heimrich and Rango each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomores Jeanine Baca and Angie Ortiz had one hit apiece.
The Falcons advanced a runner as far as third base in the top of the first, as Rango singled with two outs, then stole second and continued to third on an error. But, Pacific starting pitcher Natalie King got a strikeout to end the inning.
King was not so lucky in the second inning. Heimrich led off with an infield single, and Anderson doubled to score pinch-runner Natalie Armintrout.
Anderson led off the fourth inning with a homer to centerfield, doubling the BGSU lead and providing Heimrich with one more run than she would need.
Heimrich allowed only a one-out bunt single in the third and a two-out infield hit in the seventh inning. She walked two hitters and struck out five to improve to 3-4 on the year.
King took the loss, dropping to 7-3. The senior allowed both runs and seven hits in five innings, walking three and striking out seven. Alyce Jorgensen pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit.
The Falcons' next action comes Friday (March 18), when BGSU begins play in the three-day Hoo's Who Tournament, hosted by the University of Virginia.
