BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - John Reimold scored 38 points and made the game's key defensive play, leading Bowling Green over Ball State 75-73 Monday night in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.
Reimold cut off Julien Mills' drive to the basket in the closing seconds, forcing the Ball State forward to adjust his shot. The layup attempt banged off the backboard to Bowling Green's Austin Montgomery and time expired.
The eighth-seeded Falcons (18-10) advanced to play top-seeded Miami of Ohio on Thursday in the quarterfinals in Cleveland.
Mills led the ninth-seeded Cardinals (15-13) with 25 points. Terrance Chapman and Anthony Kent added 12 points apiece.
Reimold's point total was the second-highest in MAC tournament history, seven short of Ron Harper's record for Miami of Ohio against Ball State in 1985.
He made 11 of 18 shots from the field - 6 of 12 from 3-point range - and went 10-for-11 at the foul line.
Josh Almanson provided five crucial points down the stretch for Bowling Green and finished with 20. He made two free throws after Ball State closed to 70-69 and hit a 3-pointer to stretch a 72-71 lead.
Trailing 75-71, Ball State closed to two when Kent connected on two free throws with 41 seconds remaining. Bowling Green ran the shot clock down, but Cory Eyink missed a jumper with 6 seconds to play.
Chapman got the rebound and found Mills, whose drive for the possible tying layup was thwarted by Reimold.
