Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University head coach Danny Schmitz recorded career victory number 400 with a 6-1 victory over IPFW on Friday afternoon at Warren Steller Field. The Falcons finished with a sweep of the Mastodons thanks to a 14-7 victory in the nightcap.
Schmitz, who is in his 15th season as the skipper of the Falcons, becomes the first BGSU coach in ANY SPORT to reach the 400-win plateau with a career record of 401-355-4 (.530 pct.). Schmitz becomes the eighth Mid-American Conference coach to reach the 400-win mark and is third among active MAC coaches for career victories.
Game 1 Recap...
Left-hander Alan Brech (6-1) allowed just one run and four hits in 6.1 innings of work in a 6-1 victory over IPFW. The sophomore had given up just one hit through six innings, but surrendered three hits and a run in the top of the seventh inning before senior Matt Hundley came in with the bases loaded to record his fifth save of the season.
Senior Andy Hudak drove in the first run of the game with a single to centerfield in the first inning, scoring Eric Lawson from third base. A Nolan Reimold RBI-single and a Jeff Warnock RBI-bunt single gave BGSU a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Falcons plated three more runs in the fifth frame, two coming off a Tyler Wasserman single to right centerfield. The other run was via a Jimmy Lipari sacrifice fly.
Lawson ended 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Hudak and Reimold each had a pair of hits. BGSU held a 10-4 advantage in hits.
Game 2 Recap...
BGSU broke open a 4-1 contest with six runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning for a 14-7 victory and a doubleheader sweep of IPFW.
The six-run fifth inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Nolan Reimold, his MAC leading 13th of the season and first in 12 games. Sophomore Mike Barnard smacked his first career home run, a two-run blast to left field, in the inning as well, while Andy Hudak had an RBI-single.
In the sixth inning, freshman David Quick had a two-run single, his first RBIs as a Falcon. Sophomore Josh Dietz was the only other Falcon with multiple RBIs, driving in two with a double in the third inning. BGSU ended with 17 hits for the game with just four extra base hits.
Senior Burke Badenhop (7-2), went the distance on the mound. He have up 12 hits and seven runs (six earned) with one strikeout and two walks. Keegan Laycook (3-5) suffered the loss for IPFW. The Mastodons committed five errors in the game.
BGSU improves to 25-11 overall and 13-2 at Warren Steller Field. IPFW drops to 19-19 overall. The two teams will try and play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30, at Steller Field with a 1 p.m. start. Keep track of the status of the game on www.bgsufalcons.com.
BGSU Notes...
• Reimold finished the day 5-for-8 with five RBIs and three runs scored.
• Lawson improved his season-best hitting streak to nine games, while Hudak and Josh Stewart improved their streaks to seven games.
•Brech has allowed just three runs in his last 33.1 innings pitched.
