Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green's Andy Hudak (baseball) and Buffalo's Faith Thompson (track and field) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on April 5, 2005.
Hudak (infield, Sr., 3.52, integrated language arts, Toledo, Ohio) led the Falcons to a perfect 5-0 record last week, including a sweep of the three-game series versus Central Michigan. He led the Falcons with a .500 batting average, going 9-for-18, and drove in the game-winning runs in two of the three victories over CMU. For the week, Hudak led the team in hits (9), doubles (3), RBI (7), slugging percentage (.833) and runs (6). He had three hits, including a double and a homer, and four RBI in Sunday's first game against Central, driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Two days earlier, Hudak had supplied all of the runs with a two-run single in a 2-0 victory over the Chippewas. He was named the MAC West Division Player of the Week yesterday and has moved into a tie for sixth place on the school career doubles list (38), and is now tied for seventh all-time in RBI (132).
Thompson (throws, Gr., 3.973, psychology, Niagara Falls, N.Y.) has continued her impressive outdoor season with a double win at the Ohio Invitational. In bad weather conditions, Thompson took first place in both the shot put (47-5.25) and hammer throw (186-00) in the 11 team meet, setting stadium records in both events. Her hammer throw finish broke the record set by UB's Sarah Fletcher in 2002. Thompson's throws were NCAA regional qualifying marks. She has posted regional qualifying marks in both events in all three of her meets this outdoor season. UB's women won the team title at the meet.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives
