BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In a match that was much closer than the final score indicated, visiting Eastern Michigan University picked up a 6-1 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 8). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in the MAC. The Falcons saw a two-match winning streak snapped, and are now 10-6 and 2-2, respectively.
The Eagles captured three narrow doubles matches, with each contest decided by an 8-5 or 8-6 score. At the top flight, Eastern's Victoria Domina and Vanessa Frankowski topped senior Susie Schoenberger and sophomore Ashley Jakupcin by an 8-6 final. The second-level Falcon duo of junior Andrea Meister and freshman Andrea Volle fell by the identical narrow score, while senior Cameron Benjamin and junior Heidi Romer dropped an 8-5 match at the third flight.
In singles, Benjamin picked up BGSU's lone win, battling back from a first-set loss to defeat Flavia Micati at the sixth flight. The Falcons dropped the other five singles matches, but three of those battles required a third set.
At the top set, Schoenberger put up a tough fight before losing to Domina, the reigning MAC Player of the Year. Schoenberger dropped the first set, but bounced back to capture the second set before falling in the desicive third set.
At the second flight, Jakupcin split her first two sets with EMU's Elizabeth Syrova by identical 6-4 scores, before Syrova won the 'super-tiebreaker' by an 11-9 count.
Frankowski topped Volle at the third set, while Yana Parfenyuk needed three sets to squeak past Romer at the fourth flight. The Eagles' Laura Fernandez downed Meister in fifth-flight action.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday (April 9), hosting the arch-rival University of Toledo at Keefe Courts. The match, which begins at 1:00 p.m., will be preceded by 'Senior Day' festivities, as the three seniors on the BGSU squad -- Schoenberger, Benjamin and Laura Kokinda -- will be recognized.
