CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University student-athlete Lindsay Heimrich (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV University Division Softball Team. Heimrich, a junior, was named to the second team, it was announced Thursday (May 12).
Heimrich is the only Mid-American Conference student-athlete on the squad. She maintains a 3.80 cumulative grade point average as a journalism major.
Heimrich was named to the team for the second consecutive year, having earned first-team honors in 2004. The district team is made up of student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
To qualify, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or important reserve on the team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
Heimrich, who has been slowed somewhat by injuries this season, still has hit .250, good for fourth on the team. A first baseman/pitcher, she has a record of 5-8 in the circle, with an earned-run average of 2.72. Her five wins include a two-hit shutout of Pacific, a team receiving votes in the national poll at the time, and a three-hit shutout of Minnesota. She was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week after picking up all three of BGSU's wins at the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., in mid-March.
Heimrich also had road wins over Marshall and Central Michigan. At the plate, she has had seven two-hit games this season, including a 2-for-4 performance in a 5-4 win over nationally-ranked Northwestern (March 6). In that game, she capped the Falcons' comeback from a 4-0 deficit with a walk-off, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh.
The Falcons of head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw, following Wednesday's 2-0 setback to Miami in the MAC Tournament, now prepare to face Eastern Michigan University in an elimination game Thursday (May 12). BGSU will meet Eastern in a game scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
