CLEVELAND, Ohio - A pair of Bowling Green State University student-athletes have been named Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 10. Burke Badenhop (baseball) and Kerri McClung (track & field) have earned the league weekly honors. The announcement was just made yesterday (May 18) on the league's web site.
Buffalo's Melissa Pace (softball) shared the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week award with McClung.
Badenhop (pitcher, Sr., 3.94, economics, Perrysburg, Ohio) picked up a win in relief over MAC-leading Miami. In his only appearance of the week, Badenhop threw four-and-two-thirds innings of one-run, five-hit relief, as the Falcons won at MU, 13-9 on Friday afternoon. He struck out three RedHawks and did not walk a batter. In April, Badenhop was named BGSU's 2004-05 Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. On the season, he has a record of 8-2, and is the first Falcon since 2000 to win as many as eight games in a season. Badenhop has an 8-2 mark and a 3.94 ERA.
McClung (throws, Sr., 3.85, special education, Portland, Ind.) broke her own school record in the shot put at the Campbell/Wright Open last weekend, marking the third time this season that she has broken the BGSU shot put record. Her throw of 52-08.25 broke her record by over two feet.
Pace (first base, Sr., 3.567, psychology, Long Beach, Calif.) hit .300 with a team-high six RBIs and a 1.000 slugging percentage in UB's four victories which sent the Bulls into the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the first time in school history. Pace hit a three-run homerun in each game of a doubleheader sweep of Ohio on Saturday as she was a combined 3-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBIs in the two games. She was also perfect in the field in 26 chances at first base on the week.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Akron: Jenna Strouse (track & field, throws, Jr., 3.542, secondary education, Mt. Vernon, Ohio) won the discus at the Campbell/Wright Open last weekend with a season-best and regional-qualifying effort of 156-00. That throw moved her into the top five in the league table and it also ranks her 20th in the region. She is the only MAC student-athlete in the Mideast region to qualify in both the shot put and discus.
Central Michigan: Jill DeRoche (softball, pitcher, So., 3.09, physical education, Brighton, Mich.) went 2-0 last week with a 0.00 ERA. She tossed a complete game shutout against Bowling Green on Saturday and then notched a relief win later that afternoon against the Falcons in the nightcap. In 9.0 innings pitched on the week, DeRoche did not allow a run and she gave up just three hits while striking out seven. With her two victories, she improved to a perfect 11-0 in the MAC with a save and two shutouts.
Male Nominees: Central Michigan: David Jones (track and field, pole vault, Jr., 3.07, commercial recreation, St. Joseph, Mich.) set a school record on his way to winning the pole vault at the Len Paddock Invitational with a mark of 17-5, breaking the mark of 17-4 set in 1979 by Curt Geerlings. The vault is the second-best mark in the Mid-American Conference this outdoor season, and an NCAA Regional qualifier.
Miami: Jon Franzese (baseball, DH, Jr., 3.21, mechanical engineering, Barrington, Ill.) batted .364 (4-for-11) as Miami took two of three games from BGSU and took over top spot in the MAC. He homered and drove in three runs while walking once. Franzese had an on base percentage of .417 and slugged .636.
Toledo: J.R. Duffey (baseball, RHP, Sr., 3.171, marketing, Columbus, Ohio) hurled a seven-hit shutout to lead Toledo to a 2-0 win over Buffalo on Sunday (15-26-1, 2-11-1 MAC). Duffey (4-5) displayed tremendous control of his pitches with one walk and two strikeouts and tossed his team-leading third complete game of the season and his second career shutout. Duffey was also aided by a solid defensive effort. The Rockets turned three double plays to help win Toledo's first conference series of the season. It was also UT's first shutout of the 2005 campaign and its first since blanking Kent State, 1-0, in 10 innings on March 28, 2004 at Kent.
