KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University baseball team exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-3 victory over host Western Michigan Friday afternoon ay Hyames Field. While the offense posted eight runs on 13 hits, sophomore Alan Brech recorded his eighth win of the season after eight strong innings, allowing just two runs and nine hits, striking out five.
BGSU (33-15, 12-7) got out to an early 2-0 with runs in the first and second inning. Steve Raszka brought home Eric Lawson in the top of the first with an RBI single, while Kevin Longstreth increased the lead with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Tyler Wasserman in the second.
WMU (25-22, 12-8) tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the second.
The two teams exchanged goose eggs for the next four innings, before the Falcons posted five runs in the top of the seventh to run away with the series opener. Hits by Lawson, Josh Stewart and Andy Hudak brought home the first run of the inning. Nolan Reimold was intentionally walked to load the bases for Raszka who grounded into a fielder's choice for run number two. Back-to-back Bronco errors allowed the Falcons to record three unearned runs to complete the five run seventh inning.
The three game series will continue tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
