CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green's Andy Hudak (baseball) was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced late Tuesday (May 24). Hudak's honor marks the fifth time a Falcon baseball student-athlete has garnered the award in the last eight weeks.
Hudak (first base, Sr., 3.52, integrated language arts, Toledo, Ohio) hit .400 last week as the Falcons split four games, all on the road, and clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament. Hudak had at least one hit in each of the four games on the week, going 6-for-15 with a team-high five runs scored and two RBI. He had two doubles and a team-high four walks, for a slugging percentage of .533 and an on-base percentage of .526.
Hudak went 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring two of the Falcons' three runs in a one-run loss at Michigan. He was 2-for-4 with two walks, two more runs scored, a double, and an RBI in a midweek non-league 10-4 win at Toledo.
Then, Hudak had a 2-for-5 day with a run and an RBI in Friday's win at Western Michigan, 8-3. The next day, he had a double and a walk.
Hudak, who was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team earlier this month, is hitting a team-high .378 this season, with 10 homers, 54 RBI, 50 runs scored and a slugging percentage of .616. He leads the Falcons in hits (70), at-bats (185) and batting average and is second in runs, RBI, doubles (12), total bases (114), slugging and on-base percentage (.487).
Hudak is tied for the BG lead with 38 walks and is the lone BG player to have started all 49 games this year. In MAC play, Hudak hit a team-best .361.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Male Nominees:
Buffalo: Joe Mihalics (baseball, short stop, Sr., 3.07, history, Tonawanda, N.Y.) led the Bulls to four wins in as many games last week, batting 5-for-14 (.357) with a double, a triple and two walks. He slugged .571, scored twice and drove in three runs. He hit a go-ahead double in the 5-2 win against Niagara on Tuesday before scoring an eighth-inning insurance run on Saturday in a 6-2 win over Marshall after he tripled to chase the starter from the mound. On Sunday, he was the lone Bull to manage two hits as they took a 1-0 decision from the Thundering Herd despite getting just four hits in the game.
Miami: Keith Weiser (baseball, pitcher, So., 3.40, sport studies, Oxford, Ohio) won the first game of a three-game set for Miami's baseball team at Kent State on Friday, a series Miami needed to sweep in order to host the MAC Tournament this week. He gave up six hits in 6.2 innings, allowing two runs, two walks and striking out two, handing a 6-2 lead to Brian Bachman for the save in Miami's 6-3 win. He improved to 8-0 on the year.
