HEAD COACH Gregg Brandon
"It was a good controlled scrimmage. We did not do a lot of banging. We probably got 50 to 60 plays in. I thought the first offense did a nice job of moving the ball down the field. We've got some guys hurt on defense, so a lot of the guys we anticipate to have on the field vs. Wisconsin, I have not had on the field since early in camp. We got some younger guys some reps, which is why we scrimmaged today."
(Did any of the younger guys stand out today?)
"I thought those two young running backs, Bobby Thomas and Chris Bullock, really ran the ball well. They punched it (in the goal-line drills); they did a nice job. Calvin Wiley and Erique Dozier had big hits on defense. I think Devon Parks -- who is not a young player -- is really stepping up. He is having a big camp at defensive end, getting great pressure on the quarterback."
(On awarding scholarships to Jon Jakubowski and Andrew Stanford)
"Jon has been in the program for four years now, and he keeps getting better and better. He is a quality kid, deserving of the scholarship, as is Andrew Stanford. Andrew has worked his way into the two-deep on the offensive line at guard."
(How do you sit for the season?) "We still have some work to do. I am not too concerned offensively. We are clicking along pretty good. I think the right side of the line is solidifying with [Derrick] Markray and Drew Nystrom. At center, Jon Culp is doing a nice job, John Lanning is hanging right in there. That is still a two-horse race. The competition has really helped there. Defensively, we just haven't had everyone healthy, but that is coming. Those guys have to learn the schemes with what coach John Lovett is installing, and we still have time to work that out."
B.J. Lane
(How closely do you work together with P.J. Pope?)
"Every day, in the weight room, we're working together. Out here, we're running and conditioning. We've been workout partners for the last two years, so every day it's me and him, constantly pushing each other and getting ready for the season."
(Have you learned anything from him?)
"Definitely. Downfield vision; making the safeties miss, I learned from him. Catching the ball. We kind of help each other out."
(Do you see yourselves as kind of a tandem?)
"Yeah, last year it was a one-two punch. We're definitely a pair - you don't know who to stop. I think we're both versatile and have strengths in different areas of our game."
(What are your goals for this season?)
"Just to succeed as a team. We are definitely looking to win the MAC. We are looking to make it to another bowl game and win that. We are looking for a great season. We'll play each game like it's our last and take it one game at a time."
Terrill Mayberry
(How has it been working with Coach Lovett?)
"It's been good. It's been a very good transition. Players are eager to learn. We all know that we need to get better, and there are steps that we need to take. We know that he can take us there; it's just up to us to listen and be coached."
(Have you learned a lot of new things on defense?)
"Not really, we have added a few wrinkles, and we may play a few techniques. But, I think we are just paying a lot more attention to detail, making sure guys are where they are supposed to be. It's coming along, you can see it coming along. We're making strides."
Andrew Stanford
(On receiving a scholarship today)
"It's the best thing in my life so far. To be able to come here and hang out with these guys, the camaraderie is awesome. And then, to be getting paid to come to school, it's even better. It's the greatest thing in my life."
(Was there ever a time when you got discouraged?)
"When I first came here, I thought that maybe I couldn't make it, but I just kept on working. I'm not a quitter, and to finally get this (scholarship) is a dream come true."
Jon Jakubowski
(On receiving a scholarship today)
"It's a great feeling. Every day I go out there and do the best that I can, and the most that I can for this team and this program. I'm just so thankful right now."
Charles Sharon
(Where do you feel that you guys are as a team?)
"I feel that we are coming together. We've still got some work to do. We still will keep working hard to get ready for September third, so we've still got a little work to do."
(How have you and the other veteran wide receivers been able to mentor some of the younger guys, since receivers like Cole Magner, James Hawkins and Cornelius McGrady are gone from last year's team?)
"(Because of those guys), the expectation level has been set higher. We know that we have to keep it going, and we are trying to pass that along to (the younger guys), so they'll keep it going. It's been tough for them - every camp is tough for everybody - but they've been working, and I appreciate them a whole lot."
