The BGSU football team begins the 2005 season as the preseason favorite to win the MAC's East Division and the MAC Championship game according to the MAC News Media Association. The Falcons return 13 starters from a team which finished 9-3 and won the GMAC Bowl, 52-35, over Memphis. Players report to Bowling Green on Saturday, with workouts set to begin on Sunday. All non-scrimmages are closed to the public.
Scrimmages
The Falcons will hold public scrimmages on Saturday, August 13 at 3 p.m. and Saturday, August 20 at 4 p.m.
Top 25
The Falcons will be looking to earn a spot in either the AP or USA Today Coaches poll for the fourth straight year. BGSU was ranked 21st in the preseason by The Sporting News and by Pat Forde of ESPN.com and 25th by Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook. BGSU received votes in the first USA Today Coaches poll released Friday.
The Fantastic 4
Junior All-American quarterback Omar Jacobs received his first dose of national publicity this week with a four-page feature story in the August 15 edition of ESPN The Magazine which is on newsstands now. A Heisman hopeful and Maxwell Award candidate, Jacobs earned MAC Offensive Player of the Year honors as a sophomore after throwing for 4,002 yards and a national-best 41 TDs. He also set an NCAA IA mark for TD to interception ratio with just four picks.
More National Honors
Senior left tackle Rob Warren is on the 2005 Rotary Lombardi Award watch list after earning first-team All-MAC honors last season. Senior running back P.J. Pope (1,098 yards, 15 TDs rushing and 490 yards, 6 TDs receiving) will be a candidate for the Doak Walker Award. He is a two-time All-MAC selection. Senior wide receivers Charles Sharon (1,070 yards and 15 TDs) and Steve Sanders (984 yards and 8 TDs) could catch the eye of the Biletnikoff Award committee. In addition, senior punter Nate Fry was a candidate for the Ray Guy Award last year.
Fewer Tickets Available
With the removal of the north end zone bleachers to accommodate future construction of the Sebo Athletic Center, seating capacity at Doyt L. Perry Stadium is now 23,724 instead of 28,599 as listed a year ago. BGSU plays its first home game on October 1 in a Homecoming contest against Temple. Season tickets are available by calling 877-BGSU Ticket.
Ailing
Redshirt freshman Aaron Kent (back) and redshirt sophomore Ed Massey (heart), both offensive linemen, are out indefinitely and will not take part in training camp. No other injuries are lingering from last season or spring ball.
Going To Florida
The Falcons have signed a home and home contract to play in Miami against Florida International, September 16, 2006. The Golden Panthers will return to BGSU on September 15, 2007.
