BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team began the 2005-06 year with a successful Saturday (Sept. 17), picking up three wins in a tournament at Carter Park in Bowling Green. The Falcons posted three shutouts, downing Findlay, 6-0; Hillsdale, 1-0; and Miami-Hamilton, 11-0 in six innings.
The BGSU pitching staff picked up right where it left off in the spring, allowing no runs and only four hits in the three games. In fact, a pair of Falcon hurlers combined on a no-hitter in the win over Findlay. Senior Liz Vrabel went four innings, while freshman Hayley Wiemer threw three innings vs. the Oilers. BG allowed just two baserunners, both on infield errors.
At the plate, both senior Gina Rango and sophomore Allison Vallas were 2-for-3, with Rango picking up a double and a triple.
The second game was a pitchers' duel, with Vrabel coming out on the winning end. The senior threw a complete-game one-hitter in the 1-0 win over Hillsdale, striking out 12 batters in the seven innings. Junior Jeanine Baca had two hits in three at-bats to lead the Falcon offense.
While pitching was the name of the game on Saturday, the BG bats made their presence felt vs. Miami-Hamilton, erupting for 11 runs in the six-inning, run-rule win. Junior Ashley Zirkle and freshman Wendy Sheehan each were 2-for-3 in the win, with Wiemer allowing just three hits in her complete-game effort in the circle.
Vrabel and Wiemer allowed just four hits, including one bunt, in the three games.
The Falcons' Sunday (Sept. 18) slate was to include a game vs. Toledo and a rematch with Findlay at Carter Park.
