BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis Falcons concluded the first weekend of the 2005-06 season Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25) at the school's own BGSU Invitational. The seven-team invitational was shortened slightly due to afternoon rains at BGSU's Keefe Courts, but all of the flight champions were crowned.
The University at Buffalo had the most success, as Bulls players won four of the seven singles flights and a pair of doubles crowns. Kristin Ortman, Katrin Fischer, Natalie Dean and Tina Jacob were singles champions at flights two through five, respectively, while Fischer teamed up with Miglena Nenova to win the title at the second doubles flight, and Jacob partnered with Andreea Novaceanu for a third-flight crown.
The University of Toledo's Myriam Cueva won the #1 singles flight title, and was one half, along with Eunice Paravicini, of the doubles winners at the top flight.
Xavier University had the remaining two champions, with Alicia Papa capturing the sixth singles flight crown, and Kate Lohner the winner at the seventh flight.
In addition to BGSU, UB, UT and XU, the seven-school field included Ferris State University, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.
Highlighting the Falcons' weekend in singles play was freshman Stefanie Menoff, who finished second at the fifth flight. Menoff won the first two matches of her collegiate singles career, both in straight sets, before falling in the championship match to UB's Jacob.
Senior Heidi Romer was third at flight number three, while freshman Libby Harrison tied for third place at the sixth flight. Harrison appeared on her way to a third-place finish before the rains came. She had defeated Toledo's Claire Smalley, 6-0, in the first set, and led the second set by a 4-1 score when the match was halted.
Junior Ashley Jakupcin, the Falcons' representative at the top flight, posted a fourth-place finish.
In doubles play, Romer and freshman Kelsey Jakupcin finished second at the second flight, winning a pair of matches before falling by an 8-5 count in the final.
