BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after picking up a pair of wins in the state of Arizona last weekend, returns to the Midwest to face a pair of formidable foes this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards (2-2-0) will head to East Lansing, Mich., for a Friday (Sept. 9) date with Michigan State University ... kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at Old College Field ... then, BGSU will return home for a Sunday (Sept. 11) contest vs. Eastern Illinois University ... that game, a matchup of 2004 NCAA Tournament teams, will begin at noon at Cochrane Field.
TRUNDLE NAMED MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Julie Trundle was named the MAC Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Sept. 5) ... Trundle earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career ... a native of Medina, Ohio, she figured in the scoring of both match-winning goals at the tournament in Flagstaff ... on Friday (Sept. 2), Trundle scored on a free kick with just over six minutes remaining in the second half, breaking a tie match and giving the Falcons a 2-1 win over host Northern Arizona ... two days later, Trundle's through-ball found classmate Samantha Meister for the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Boise State.
FALCONS WIN MOUNTAIN CLASSIC
BGSU picked up a pair of wins and a tournament title at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz., over the weekend ... the Brown and Orange downed host Northern Arizona (2-1) and Boise State (1-0) to claim the crown ... the Falcons are now 8-6 all-time in regular-season tournaments, with marks of 3-1 in home matches, 1-2 in away contests and 4-3 in neutral-site matches ... at NAU, BGSU went 2-0 in an in-season tournament for the third time in school history, and the first time since the Kent Classic on Aug. 25-26, 2000 ... those two wins, over St. Bonaventure and Bucknell, were the first two matches in the head-coaching career of one Andy Richards ... SHINGLER, TRUNDLE EARN TOURNEY HONORS AT NAU
A pair of BGSU seniors were honored as the Falcons went 2-0 at Northern Arizona's tournament ... Julie Trundle was named the offensive MVP of the tourney after figuring in the scoring of both match-winning goals ... Trundle's exploits were detailed earlier in this release ... Ali Shingler was named the tourney's most valuable goalkeeper after picking up a pair of wins ... Shingler made seven saves in each of BGSU's two victories, allowing just one goal on the weekend ... she picked up a shutout against Boise State.
SHINGLER'S SHUTOUT
Ali Shingler's shutout of Boise State was her first of the season and the 10th complete-match shutout of her career ... she ranks second in BGSU history in that category ... Erika Flanders holds the school record with 17 career shutouts ... Flanders and Shingler hold down the top-two spots on all of BG's career goalkeeping lists.
HEAD COACH Andy Richards
Andy Richards is in his sixth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons ... he has an overall record of 49-54-10, and a MAC Tournament mark of 7-3-1 ... Richards has led BGSU to the four finest seasons in school history over his first five years ... he has guided the Falcons to the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament on four occasions, to the championship match three times, and, in 2004, to the first league tourney title and NCAA Tournament berth in school history ... Eric Golz is in his second season with the program, and his first as the top assistant.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU opened the 2005 season with a pair of home losses, but bounced back with two victories in Flagstaff, Ariz., last weekend ... the Falcons fell to Oakland, 4-1, on Friday (Aug. 26), and lost to Wright State, 4-0, two days later ... but, BG picked up victories over Northern Arizona (2-1) and Boise State (1-0) at last weekend's La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Classic ... senior Samantha Meister leads the Falcons with two goals and four points on the season, while classmate Julie Trundle and freshman Kristin McDonald have a goal apiece ... Trundle is second on the Falcons with three points ... senior Ali Shingler has played every minute in goal, and has 25 saves and a 2.25 goals-against average ... BG returned 15 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's MAC Tournament championship team ... the group of returnees includes no fewer than nine seniors, the most in school history ... the senior class is looking to become the first class in school history to qualify for the MAC Tournament in four consecutive seasons ... Michigan State is 1-1-2 on the young season ... last weekend, the Spartans shut out a pair of Big 12 teams, with a 1-0 win over sixth-ranked Texas A&M and a scoreless tie vs. Texas ... MSU's other two matches to date were a 1-1 tie at Kentucky and a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati ... State has scored two goals and allowed two goals to date ... sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Galas, who had played fewer than 10 career minutes entering the season, has played every minute of 2005, and has 30 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.45 this year ... she was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 5) ... senior Emma Harris and sophomore Maureen Pawlak tied for the team lead with five goals and 15 points each last year, and both Harris and Pawlak have one goal this year ... 15th-year head coach Tom Saxton welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including eight starters, from the 2004 squad ... that team went 12-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the Big Ten.
