BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Penny Dean and the Tennis Falcons will kick off the 2006 season in Columbus, Ohio with a dual match at in-state rival Ohio State University. Saturday's match will begin at 4:00 p.m.
"We're going down there to win," said Dean. "As a team, we have spoken about not being intimidated by the Big Ten. We feel ready and have had a good intensity at practice."
Dean recognized the match not only as an opportunity to test the team before conference play but also for some of the players to return to their hometown.
"We have a few players from the area so it will be a good opportunity for us to play in front of their families and a few alumni," said Dean.
Interestingly enough, the match will offer more than just a renewed in-state rivalry. This will be the first meeting for Dean and Buckeye coach Chuck Merzbacher, whom she taught as a Junior Excellence participant, since 2001.
The Orange and Brown will close January with a set of matches versus Michigan State and Youngstown State. The match against the Spartans will be held in East Lansing, Mich. on Jan. 27 while the YSU match will take place Jan. 29 at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
