BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team captured their 11th consecutive victory with a 3-0 sweep over the Akron Zips Friday night inside Anderson Arena, tying the longest win streak in school history.
A match-opening kill by Sophomore Kendra Halm foreshadowed what was in-store for the visiting Zips the rest of the night as the Bucyrus, Ohio native compiled a team-high 16 kills and nine blocks in a dominating performance.
Game one was a no contest, seeing the Falcons hit .516 while limiting Akron to a dismal .027 hitting percentage. Bowling Green doubled up the Zips in kills, 18-9 for a 30-17 win. Halm posted seven kills and three blocks in the opening act.
Bowling Green continued the red-hot offense with a .462 hitting pace in game two. The Brown and Orange stymied the Zips attack once again, recording five blocks while holing them to a .000 hitting percentage. Back-to-back terminations by Halm handed the Falcons an 18-9 lead midway through the second game. Sophomore Chelsey Meek's seven digs pushed the Falcons to a 30-14 win.
Just when it seemed like BGSU would roll to an easy 3-0 sweep, the Zips made some adjustments in the locker room. UA fought blow-for-blow with Bowling Green through the first half of game three, even holding a 11-10 lead. However, a Halm kill followed by two Meek service aces gave the Falcons a 13-11 edge that they would not relinquish in the 30-21 win.
The Brown and Orange averaged a season-high 5.0 team blocks per game.
Falcon volleyball returns to action Saturday afternoon with a home match against Buffalo scheduled to being at 3 PM.
Quotes from Head Coach Denise Van De Walle:
"I thought we looked really good at the net tonight. Kendra (Halm) was on fire. She led us in kills and blocks. Her blocking was incredible. She had nine of our 15 blocks by herself."
"Our middles were tough to beat. They carried the load offensively for us by hitting .455 and .520."
"I thought Chrissy (Gothke) set well tonight. She found a way to set the middle in transition which was exactly what we needed. My favorite play of the night was the one-handed one ball she put up to (Stephanie) Swiger ... and Swiger crushed it. It was awesome. She was really effective with her tip tonight. She went six for seven, no errors."
"Madeline (Means) made some great one-handed defensive plays. Chelsey (Meek) led us in digs. It was a really good team effort. I'm happy with how we played."
"The crowd was fun tonight. For it being fall break I was pleased with the turn out. I hope they'll be back tomorrow when we play Buffalo."
