BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team roared out to a 32-3 lead en route to a 90-47 win over the University of Findlay Wednesday night (Nov. 1). The exhibition game was held at Anderson Arena.
All 12 players on the Falcons' active roster saw between 11 and 23 minutes of action, with 11 of those 12 players finding the scoresheet.
Senior Carin Horne had 18 points, all in the opening half of play, to pace four Falcon double-digit scorers.
"We're excited to be able to play against someone else," said BGSU head coach Curt Miller. "At the same time, though, the exhibition game comes very early in the practice season, and we are certainly not the same team that people were accustomed to seeing in March.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us. I was very disappointed with our second half, but some good things did come out of tonight's game. I really liked the tempo we created in the first half. We want to get up and down the floor and we want to be a high-scoring team, and I thought we did a good job of pushing the tempo in the first half."
Both teams started slowly, but the Falcons soon picked up the pace. After nearly two minutes of scoreless play, senior Ali Mann rebounded her own miss and hit a layup. Then, Horne got a steal at midcourt and sailed in for a breakaway layup, and the Falcons were off and running.
A layup by the Oilers' Audra Mihalic got the visitors on the scoreboard at the 17:26 mark, but a Horne 3-pointer was followed by a jumper from junior Kate Achter. UF's Brittany Wells split a pair of free throws with 16:01 left in the half, but the Oilers would not score again for over seven minutes.
The Falcons went on a 23-0 run, with Horne, Mann and sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry each scoring six points during that time. Goldsberry capped the run with six-straight points, converting a three-point play at the 10:02 mark, then hitting a trey from beyond the arc 59 seconds later to give the Brown and Orange a 32-3 lead.
BGSU extended the advantage to 55-17 at halftime, with Horne single-handedly outscoring the Oilers in the opening 20 minutes.
"I thought we played a solid first half," said senior Liz Honegger, who had 13 points. "It's early in the season, and obviously we have a lot to work on. But, tonight was a good chance to play against another team, see what is working for us and find out what we need to improve. It gives us a good base, and obviously we have some things we need to work on."
UF scored the first six points of the second half, but the Falcons scored six unanswered points of their own, and the BGSU lead never fell below 30 points in that second stanza.
In addition to Horne and Honegger, Mann and Goldsberry both hit double digits, with 12 points apiece.
Nanette Cox scored 12 points to lead Findlay, while Maggie Gompers (the younger sister of BGSU's Julie Gompers) had nine points. All 21 of the duo's points came on 3-point field goals, as Cox and Gompers combined for seven of the Oiler's nine treys.
The Falcons outscored UF by a 35-30 margin after the intermission.
"Credit should go to Findlay for an excellent second half," said Miller. "They exploited some things, and that's what you hope to get out of an exhibition game. You hope to get hurt in certain areas, so that you can go back into the film room and teach your kids about some things that we should and shouldn't do."
BGSU committed just five turnovers while forcing Findlay into 31 miscues. The Falcons held a whopping 40-0 advantage in points off turnovers, and BG also had sizable margins in fast-break points (26-0) and points in the paint (44-10).
BGSU held a 53-35 rebounding margin, and the Falcons had 30 offensive boards. Sophomore Jasmine McCall had a total of seven rebounds in the game, while Honegger and freshman Tara Breske had six boards apiece.
After a closed scrimmage at Xavier Saturday (Nov. 4), the Falcons will begin the 2006-07 regular season with a game at Detroit on Friday, Nov. 10.
