CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced sophomore forward Justin Kim has been named to the All-MAC second-team as voted by the league's head coaches. Kim becomes the 36th Falcon to earn All-MAC honors.
"We are proud of Justin and his effort this season," said head coach Fred Thompson. "It is unfortunate that he was injured in the later part of the season. If he would have had the chance to participate more, he could have had a stronger showing and would have been even more of a presence for us on the field."
The Mililani, Hawaii native led the Falcons in points (12), goals (5), shots (34) and shots on goal (19) in 2006. In 15 matches he earned 13 starts and was one of four Falcons to notch a game-winning-goal. He also started in each of the three conference matches in which he participated. In 1021 total minutes, Kim recorded two assists with one in MAC play.
Kim has recorded 20 points on seven goals and six assists in two seasons with the Orange and Brown. The All-MAC nod is his first post-season accolade.
NIU picked up a pair of specialty awards as Marcus McCarty earned the Newcomer of the Year while coach Steve Simmons was voted the Coach of the Year. Among the other MAC student-athletes to be recognized during the championship weekend was Akron midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic. Ubiparipovic became the second consecutive Zip to be named the Player of the Year. All three will compete in today's MAC championship match between second seed Akron and top seed NIU.
A league high six Zips were named to the All-MAC first-team while another pair were selected for the second-team. Northern Illinois saw three Huskies named to the first-team and added two more to the second-team. Buffalo tied NIU adding five student-athletes to the list with two first-team selections and three second-team honorees. Western Michigan filled the remaining two slots on the second-team.
Bowling Green advanced to the tournament semifinal round after beating WMU on the road, 2-1. Akron then provided too much offense for the Falcons and won the semifinal contest 8-2 to advance to the championship match. The victory over the Bronco's was the first post-season win for the Birds of Prey under Thompson.
Because the squad was comprised of juniors, sophomores, and newcomers Bowling Green will return their entire roster next season.
