FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Bowling Green State University scored four goals in the first 27 minutes of Saturday night's contest en route to a 6-4 win over the University of Alaska Nanooks, in Fairbanks, Alaska. The win snaps a nine game losing streak for the Falcons.
BGSU took a few minutes to get their skates under them as they were outshot 5-0 in the first four minutes, but sophomore Jimmy Spratt, made several key saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Falcons (4-13-1, 2-10-0) gained a 1-0 lead for the second straight night, this time with the help of sophomore Brandon Svendsen. Mike Nesdill gained the puck behind his own net and fed a streaking James Perkin down the right side. Perkin found and open Tim Maxwell who shot in on UA's Chad Johnson. Johnson kicked the puck onto the tape of Svendsen, who placed the puck in the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Just three minutes later Todd McIlrath grabbed an errant pass between the Nanook circles and wristed a shot past Johnson for a 2-0 Falcon advantage. It also gave the Falcons their first 2-0 lead since November 4 in a 4-2 win over Lake Superior.
Bowling Green scored two goals on their first three shots of the night.
The scoring barrage continued just 1:25 into the second period as Jonathan Matsumoto scored his third goal of the weekend with a power-play tally. Kevin Schmidt found Matsumoto, who skated around Schmidt and fired a wrister past Johnson. Sophomore Tim Maxwell also assisted on the goal.
Six minutes later the Falcons had two firsts as Josh Boyd grabbed a Brett Molnar rebound and snuck the puck past Johnson for his first career collegiate goal. Also assisting on the goal was freshman Tommy Dee, for his second assist in as many games. The assist was Molnar's first career point.
Alaska finally got on the scoreboard at the midway point of the second period as Curtis Fraser connected on a 5-on-3 power-play goal.
With just over three minutes remaining in the second stanza Fraser got his second power-play goal to get the Nanooks to within two at 4-2 to close out the scoring in the second.
BGSU regained their three goal advantage as Matsumoto and freshman James Perkin connected. While on a long shift, Matsumoto fed the puck forward to a streaking James Perkin. Perkin skated in uncontested and beat Johnson on the stick side at the 7:59 mark of the third.
The three goal lead did not last long. Exactly one minute later Fraser connected on his third goal of the night to cut the Falcon lead to 5-3.
