LAST MEETING: Delaware 48, BGSU 44 (Dec. 28, 2005)
THE GAME
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, winners of 42 of the last 48 games, faces one of just two teams to defeat them in regular-season play a year ago ... the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, currently ranked 21st in the nation in the USA Today ESPN poll and 25th by the Associated Press, hosts the University of Delaware in Friday (Dec. 29) play, with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena (4,700) ... the Fightin' Blue Hens, 10-1 on the season, are receiving votes in each poll ... Friday's game begins a two-game homestand for the Falcons, who will face Robert Morris University in a New Year's Eve (Dec. 31) contest at "The House That Roars."
HOMECOURT ADVANTAGE
BGSU will be putting a lengthy streak on the line Friday ... the Falcons went a perfect 11-0 in home games last season, and -- after downing Indiana by 35 points (Dec. 6) -- have won 21 consecutive games at Anderson Arena ... BG's homecourt winning streak is the second longest in the nation, trailing only LSU's 38-game streak.
BGSU-DELAWARE: THE REMATCH
Delaware, as mentioned, is one of just two teams to beat the Falcons in the regular season in 2005-06 ... the Fightin' Blue Hens downed BGSU by a 48-44 score nearly a year ago to the day (Dec. 28, 2005) in the first round of the Hawk Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. ... the Falcons lost despite holding the Hens to just 14 total baskets and a 29.8 field-goal percentage for the game ... BG's only regular-season setbacks in '05-06 each came by four points, to UD and to Kentucky (in overtime).
HONEGGER SETS ANOTHER BGSU CAREER RECORD
Senior Liz Honegger already held the BGSU career record for blocked shots ... now, she has set the school record for three-point field goals made ... Honegger was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range in the Texas-Arlington game ... the third trey came with 45 seconds left in the opening half, and was the 174th of her career ... she broke the record of 173 set by Sara Puthoff (1994-98) ... Honegger is second on the list of 3-point field goals attempted.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
* The Falcons enter the Delaware contest with a 8-2 record on the season, and BGSU is 3-0 at Anderson Arena this season to date ... five of BG's wins have come by over 30 points, including an 82-47 victory over Indiana in the last game at "The House That Roars" on Dec. 6 ... most recently, the Falcons split a pair of contests in Cancun, Mexico ... BGSU suffered a nine-point loss against fourth-ranked Duke, 55-46, to snap a six-game winning streak (Dec. 19) ... the next day, the Falcons bounced back with a 59-48 win over Texas-Arlington ... after posting a 68-37 win at Detroit (Nov. 10) to open the season, head coach Curt Miller's squad suffered a narrow overtime loss at Notre Dame (85-81, Nov. 13) in a matchup of two NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago ... then, however, BGSU picked up victories over Albany (76-40) and Fairleigh Dickinson (87-56) in the UCF Tournament (Nov. 17-18), before opening the home slate with an 86-67 win over Temple (Nov. 24) ... then, the Falcons posted wins over Oakland (89-58, Nov. 29), IU and St. Bonaventure (71-46, Dec. 9).
* Through 10 games, five BG players are averaging over nine points per game ... senior Ali Mann has 15.5 points to lead the way, while senior Carin Horne (11.8) is also in double digits ... junior Kate Achter (9.9) and seniors Liz Honegger (9.7) and Amber Flynn (9.4) all are averaging between nine and 10 points per game on the year ... Honegger paces the Falcons in rebounding, with 5.4 per game, while Horne has 4.9 rebounds per outing ... Achter has a team-high 4.9 assists per contest ... Horne (2.0 spg) and Mann (1.6 spg) rank 1-2 on the team in steals ... Honegger leads BG with 1.2 blocked shots per outing, and also has a team-high 23 three-point field goals made (in 46 attempts) this year.
* Flynn is shooting a team-best 63.3 percent from the field and is tied with Mann for third in rebounding (4.2 rpg apiece) ... senior Megan Thorburn has 5.7 ppg, and has 14 three-pointers made and a 43.8% 3-point field-goal rate ... she ranks third on the team in both 3s made (behind Honegger and Horne [16]) and three-point pct. (trailing Honegger and Mann).
* In addition to Flynn, sophomore Jasmine McCall has seen action in all 10 games off the bench, while junior Whitney Taylor has played in nine ... Taylor, however, will miss the Delaware game due to injury ... McCall has 3.7 ppg and is second on the Falcons in assists (2.1 apg) ... sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry has played in nine of the 10 games, and has 3.6 ppg on the year, while Taylor has 3.1 ppg.
* Through 10 games, BGSU is averaging 74.5 points per game, while allowing just 53.9 ... the Falcons are shooting 47.6 percent from the field, and have made 78 three-point field goals -- 7.80 per game -- in 192 tries (40.6%) ... BG has limited the foes to just a 36.0% field-goal rate and a 27.7% effort from long range (46-for-166 from beyond the arc) ... BGSU has made 30 more free throws than the opponents (139 to 109) ... the Falcons have a 68.5% success rate from the free-throw line, while the opposition is shooting 69.4% from the stripe.
* Miller and Company returned all five starters, and nine total letterwinners, from last year's team that finished 28-3 and won the MAC with a perfect 16-0 league ledger ... freshmen Tara Breske, Laura Bugher and Sarah Clapper round out the active roster ... each of the three have played in seven contests.
* Last year's 28-win total set school and conference records for victories in a season ... BGSU, after winning the league's regular-season title for the second year in a row, went on to win the Kraft MAC Tournament for the second-straight March ... the returning players combined for 92.9 percent of the team's scoring and 90.7% of the Falcons' rebounding total.
INJURY UPDATE
Junior Whitney Taylor suffered a knee injury in Tuesday evening's (Dec. 26) practice ... she will miss the Delaware game, and her status beyond that game will be determined ... Taylor has played in each of BGSU's first 10 games of the season, averaging 3.1 points per game ... she played several minutes at the point-guard position in the UT-Arlington game and did not commit a turnover.
GOOD AS GOLDS
Sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry showed her versatility, and her value to the team, in the Falcons' trip to Cancun ... Goldsberry scored 12 points in the Duke game (Dec. 19), doubling her previous career high ... she scored six points on four occasions during her freshman year ... Goldsberry also doubled her prior career high for three-point field goals made ... she was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc against the fourth-ranked Blue Devils, and her fifth try was halfway down before rattling out ... the next night, Goldsberry had a team- and career-high seven rebounds in the win over UT-Arlington.
FLYNN-TASTIC
Senior Amber Flynn has become a force off the bench for the Falcons ... Flynn had a career-high 16 points in the Falcons' win over UT-Arlington (Dec. 20) ... she was 7-for-9 from the field, and also had two assists to set a career standard in that area as well ... Flynn is averaging 9.4 points and 4.2 rebounds on the year, and has a team-high FG percentage of 63.3% (38-for-60).
MANN A MODEL OF CONSISTENCY
Senior Ali Mann had 15 second-half points in the Duke game, including the first eight of the second half to give BG a 31-25 lead and force the Blue Devils to take a timeout ... then, she had 16 more points in the Texas-Arlington game ... Mann, who has played in 103 games as a Falcon, now has scored in double digits 80 times ... the lone Falcon to score 10 points or more in all 10 games this season, has hit double figures in 17-straight games dating to last year.
FALCONS HANG WITH DUKE
The Falcons faced Duke, then ranked fourth in the country in both polls, in Cancun on Dec. 19 ... the Blue Devils are the highest-ranked opponent in BGSU history (Maryland was also fourth in the nation when BG played them in the 1989 NCAA Tournament ... Duke has won every other game this season by at least 21 points, but the Falcons led the Devils in the second half before losing by nine points, 55-46 ... BG held Duke to 27 points fewer than their season average ... since that game, the Blue Devils have moved up to third in both polls.
MANN MOVES UP TO FOURTH ON BG SCORING LIST
In the Falcons' two games in Cancun, senior Ali Mann moved up five spots on the school's career scoring list ... Mann headed to Mexico ranked ninth in BGSU history, but returned to the States as the fourth-ranked scorer in Falcon annals ... she enters the Delaware game with a total of 1,438 points, trailing only Jackie Motycka, Sara Puthoff and Francine Miller on that list.
HORNE GIVES BGSU THREE 1,000-POINT SCORERS ...
Senior Carin Horne surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career in the Oakland game (Nov. 29) ... Horne, needing 21 points to reach the millennium mark entering the game, had a game-high 25 ... she scored 19 in the first half, and hit a three-pointer with 16:28 left in the second half to reach the milestone ... Horne became just the 21st player to add her name to the 1,000-point list ... entering the Delaware game, she now ranks 19th in school history with 1,042 career points.
... JOINING MANN AND HONEGGER ON THAT LIST
Carin Horne joined an exclusive group that currently includes only 21 players in the history of Falcon women's basketball ... that group -- the list of 1,000-point scorers -- includes three members of the current team ... in January of 2006, Ali Mann became just the 19th player in school history to reach the millennium mark for her career, and only the sixth to do so prior to her senior year ... as mentioned, Mann now has a career total of 1,438 points to rank fourth ... three weeks after Mann reached 1,000 points, Liz Honegger became the 20th BGSU player (seventh prior to her senior year) to do so ... Honegger currently ranks 11th on the school list, with 1,276 career points ... and, don't look now, but Kate Achter -- just a third of the way through her junior season -- already has 778 points during her BGSU career.
SHE CAN DISH IT OUT AND TAKE IT
Junior Kate Achter, as mentioned, has 778 career points, ranking her 32nd in school history ... the point guard has moved onto the BGSU assists list as well as the scoring chart ... she enters the Delaware game with a career total of 323 assists, good for seventh in BG annals.
BGSU RANKED IN BOTH NATIONAL POLLS
The Falcons held their spots in the national rankings ... BGSU is ranked 21st in the nation in the USA Today/ESPN Division I Women's Basketball Coaches poll for the third consecutive week, according to Tuesday's (Dec. 26) poll ... BG is 25th in the Associated Press poll for the second-straight week ... the Falcons are ranked in the USA Today/ESPN poll for the firth consecutive week, having broken into the rankings on Nov. 28 ... BG was 24th that week, then was tied for 22nd in the country in the next week's (Dec. 5) poll ... a few more facts about BGSU, the MAC and the polls ...
* The Falcons' current run of five consecutive weeks in the USA Today/ESPN poll ties the school and MAC longevity records ... that record was set by last year's BGSU club, which was ranked in the USA Today/ESPN poll from Feb. 14 to March 13, 2006.
* That run marks only the fourth time in MAC history that a league school has had a run of three consecutive weeks in the top 25 ... three of those instances have been in the USA Today poll, with the other in the Associated Press poll ... in all four cases, however, that team has been Bowling Green.
* The Falcons were ranked in each of the two polls last year, marking the program's first appearance in a national poll in 12 years, and the first appearance for a MAC program in over four years.
* The Falcons' highest-ever ranking was 19th, in the final Associated Press poll of the 1992-93 season (March 16, 1993) ... that capped a run of four-straight weeks in that poll, the longest such run prior to last year's five-week stint.
* The Dec. 26 USA Today/ESPN poll marked the 17th week in MAC history that a league institution has been listed in that poll, and BGSU has been that team in 14 of the 17 weeks.
* Similarly, a MAC school has been ranked in the Associated Press poll in a total of 14 weeks, and BGSU has been the team in 10 of those 14 weeks.
SCOUTING DELAWARE
Delaware will bring a record of 10-1 to Anderson Arena, and the Fightin' Blue Hens have won nine consecutive games ... UD is receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls ... the Hens' nine-game winning streak includes a 16-point victory over then 20th-ranked Kentucky, and the lone loss of the season game by eight points at Boston College back on Nov. 14 ... most recently, the team captured a 66-42 win over Fordham prior to the holidays (Dec. 22) ... Delaware is 5-1 in true road games this year to date ... individually, senior guard Tyresa Smith leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 18.4 points and 8.3 boards per game ... senior forward Chrissy Fisher joins her in double dights with 14.9 ppg, and Fisher also has 8.0 rpg ... junior forward Courtney Irving averages 8.5 points per outing, while junior guards Kyle DeHaven and Melissa Czorniewy each have 7.4 ppg this year ... senior guard Alena Koshansky has 5.9 ppg and paces the team in assists (4.1 apg), while DeHaven has a team-high 3.6 steals per contest ... Fisher, Koshansky and Smith each have started all 11 games to date, while Irving has made 10 starts and Czorniewy nine for head coach Tina Martin ... Martin welcomed back six letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team that went 22-8 overall and 13-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association ... the Blue Hens advanced to the WNIT ... Martin, in her 11th year at the helm, has a record of 199-105 ... the school's athletics web site is www.udel.edu/sportsinfo.
THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Delaware, 1-0, in the all-time series between the teams ... the lone prior meeting came last year, as the Fightin' Blue Hens picked up a 48-44 win almost exactly a year ago (Dec. 28, 2005) in the Hawk Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. ... the Falcons' defense held the Hens to just 14 successful field goals and a FG pct. of 29.8% on the afternoon ... however, UD was able to get to the line, making 16-of-22 free throws compared to the Falcons' 4-of-9 effort ... the game marked BG's first loss of the 2005-06 season, and left both teams at 8-1 on the year after that contest.
TRADITIONS OF SUCCESS
The Falcons and Delaware have combined to win no fewer than 116 games since the beginning of the 2004-05 season ... the Fightin' Blue Hens are 10-1 on the year after going 25-6 in '04-05 and 22-8 last year ... BG went 23-8 two seasons ago, a school-record 28-3 last year, and the Falcons have started '06-07 with a mark of 8-2 ... in all, BGSU is 59-13 and UD 57-15 during that time.
HEAD COACH Curt Miller
BGSU head coach Curt Miller has turned the Falcon program around, to say the least, during his time in Northwest Ohio ... Miller has been named the MAC Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons, and was the 2006 Russell Athletic/WBCA Region Four Coach of the Year as well ... his career record currently stands at 101-58, in his sixth year ... over the last three-plus seasons, Miller and the Falcons are 80-23 ... BGSU has gone 40-8 in MAC regular-season play in that time, and 49-9 in all games vs. league foes during that span (9-1 in league tourney play).
STRONG SHOOTING
The Falcons shot an even 50.0 percent in the Texas-Arlington game, going 22-of-44 from the field ... BGSU has shot 50% or better in four of this year's 10 games, matching the total for all of last season ... BG is now 18-0 in such games during the Curt Miller Era.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Once again this season, the Falcons will set and/or extend some school records for non-conference contests ... BGSU has won eight non-league games to date, and is looking to set a single-season record in that department ... a few more non-conference marks ...
* BGSU has clinched a winning record in non-conference play for the fifth consecutive year, the only MAC school to have turned that trick.
* BG had not had as many as three consecutive winning non-league campaigns in over a decade (since 1991-92 to 1992-93) ... now, having clinched a winning record in the '06-07 non-conference season, BGSU has posted five-straight winning seasons in non-league action, for the first time since the 1985-86 through 1989-90 teams did so.
* BGSU's total of nine non-conference wins last year tied the school record, and the Falcons now have had at least seven non-league victories in each of the last five seasons.
* Since the start of the 2002-03 season, BG is 38-16 in regular-season, non-league games, for the most wins and highest winning percentage (70.4%) of any MAC school during that time.
* In 2004-05, the Falcons' 7-4 non-league mark enabled BG to tie the school record for most wins in a three-year period, with 21 (BGSU also went 7-4 in non-conf. action during the 2002-03 and '03-04 seasons) ... with nine non-league wins last season, the Falcons broke that record, as BG had a total of 23 non-conference victories from 2003-04 thru '05-06) ... AND, BG's total of eight wins this season means that BGSU will break that mark for the third-straight year.
* Not surprisingly, BGSU's total of 30 non-league wins from 2002-03 to 2005-06 set a school record for a four-year period ... also not surprisingly, the Falcons will break that mark again this year, as the Falcons have a total of 31 non-conference victories since the start of the 2003-04 season.
TOUGH CROWD
BGSU's 8-2 record to date is all the more impressive when considering that the Falcons' non-conference schedule is one of the toughest in school history ... the two-game homestand vs. Delaware and Robert Morris concludes a stretch in which seven of eight games are/were against teams that won 20 games last year and/or advanced to national postseason play ... that includes all five of BGSU's home non-league games ... of the three opponents on the last homestand, Temple is the defending Atlantic 10 champion, while Oakland advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year and Indiana made it to the quarterfinal round of the WNIT ... Duke, of course, won 31 games and advanced to the national championship, while UT-Arlington won 20 contests and led the nation in scoring defense last year ... BG has won five of the first six games in this stretch, losing only to Duke.
CENTURY MARK FOR FALCON SENIORS
The Indiana game marked the 100th contest since the Falcons' current senior class arrived on campus ... now, through three years plus 10 games, that group -- tri-captains Amber Flynn, Liz Honegger and Ali Mann along with Julie Gompers, Carin Horne and Megan Thorburn -- has helped the Brown and Orange to a record of 80-23 ... BGSU also has won a pair of MAC regular-season titles and made three-straight appearances in the MAC Tournament's championship game, winning the last two.
CENTURY MARK FOR MILLER AS WELL
BGSU's win at St. Bonaventure (Dec. 9) gave Falcon head coach Curt Miller his 100th career victory ... Miller is now 101-58 in his sixth year, and has become only the third BGSU women's basketball coach to reach the century mark ... Fran Voll had a 144-60 mark in seven years at BGSU (1984-91), while Jaci Clark had a 135-65 mark in her seven years at the Falcon helm (1991-98).
THE FALCONS ARE ...
* 101-58 in the five-plus years since Curt Miller took the helm in May of 2001;
* 51-29 in MAC games in that time;
* 80-23 overall and 40-8 in the MAC over the last three-plus seasons, since the current senior class arrived on campus in the fall of 2003;
* 42-6 in the last 48 overall games since February of 2005 (with the losses coming to Kansas State [2005 NCAA Tournament], Delaware, Kentucky, UCLA [2006 NCAA Tournament], Notre Dame and Duke);
* 6-0 in games after a loss during that time;
* 9-1 in the MAC Tournament in the last three seasons;
* 25-0 in the last 25 games against MAC opponents, since a loss at Eastern Michigan on Feb. 19, 2005 (the Falcons won the final three regular-season games of 2004-05, then won three-straight games in the MAC Tournament, before going 16-0 in league regular-season play and winning three more conference tourney contests in '05-06);
* 10-1 in the last 11 road games (with the overtime loss at Notre Dame snapping a nine-game road winning streak since an OT setback at Kentucky last Jan. 2);
* 42-0 when outrebounding the opponent since the start of the 2004-05 season;
* 36-3 when holding the opponent to fewer than 70 points since the start of the 2005-06 season (BGSU has only allowed two teams -- UCLA and Notre Dame -- to top the 70-point mark in the last 41 games);
* 3-4 in games played on Dec. 29 all-time (including 1-1 in home games); and
* 2-0 in Dec. 29 games during the Curt Miller Era (a 2003 win at Eastern Kentucky and a 2005 neutral-site victory over Iona ... the EKU game kick-started the current era of success at BGSU, as it was BG's first game after Christmas, and took a 4-4 Falcon team to a 21-10 mark and a berth in the MAC Tournament's championship game ... the Iona game came in the consolation contest of the Hawk Classic, a day after BG's loss to Delaware).
CLAMPING DOWN ON D
The Falcons held the fourth-ranked team in the country, Duke, without a point for nearly nine minutes in the first half of the teams' game on Dec. 19 ... BG has held the opponent without a field goal for at least four minutes on 19 occasions through the first 10 games, and BG has kept the opposition without a point for a four-minute span 10 times this year to date ... the Falcons held Albany without a field goal for a stretch of 9:02, and also held the Great Danes without a point for 6:50 ... the latter stretch was the longest of the season for the Falcons, prior to the Duke game.
DEFENSE DOES IT AGAIN
The Falcons have greatly improved defensively during the Curt Miller Era ... last year, the Falcons allowed opponents to combine for a field-goal percentage of just 37.3%, the second lowest in school history and lowest since 1976-77 ... since Miller and assistant head coach (and 'defensive coordinator') Jennifer Roos have arrived at BGSU, the Falcons have posted four of the top-seven totals in that category in school history ... this year, through 10 games, the BG defense has allowed foes to shoot just 36.0% from the floor.
A VETERAN STARTING LINEUP
BGSU's starting lineup features four seniors -- Liz Honegger, Carin Horne, Ali Mann and Megan Thorburn -- as well as a junior, Kate Achter ... entering the Delaware game, that group has combined to make no fewer than 399 starts in their respective Falcon careers to date ... each of the five has started at least 62 games.
MORE ON THE START CHART
As mentioned, the five BGSU starters have combined to make a total of 399 starts in the Brown and Orange ... two members of that group, seniors Liz Honegger and Ali Mann, have moved onto the individual career list for games started ... Honegger has made 102 career starts, while Mann has started 101 games ... Honegger is ranked fifth and Mann is tied for sixth on that list ... Jackie Motycka (1985-89) holds the school record with 115 starts, a record that both Honegger and Mann have a chance to break before the year is out.
FALCONS BY CLASS
THE SENIORS
BGSU's senior class is one of the finest in school history ... that group includes four returning starters in Liz Honegger, Carin Horne, Ali Mann and Megan Thorburn ... additionally, Amber Flynn was one of the most improved players in the MAC last season ... a sixth senior, Julie Gompers, missed each of the last two seasons due to injury and will again be sidelined in 2006-07 ... the class has been an integral part of the Falcons' 80-23 overall mark in the last three-plus years, and BG has advanced to the championship game of the MAC Tournament every year since they arrived.
THE JUNIORS
The Falcons' two juniors, Kate Achter and Whitney Taylor, have helped BGSU win MAC regular-season and tournament titles in each of their first two seasons ... BG has an overall record of 59-13 since the two arrived on campus, and the Falcons are 56-9 when Achter is in the starting lineup ... Taylor has played in nine of the 10 games this year, but will miss the Delaware game due to an injury suffered in practice on Tuesday (Dec. 26).
THE SOPHOMORES
Lindsey Goldsberry and Jasmine McCall have seen their team win nearly 90 percent of its games (36-5 to date), and the two players have never been a part of a loss to a MAC opponent ... McCall has played in all 41 of BGSU's games in her career to date, while Goldsberry has action in 39 contests, making two starts.
THE FRESHMEN
Tara Breske (Temperance, Mich.), Laura Bugher (Greenwood, Ind.) and Sarah Clapper (Newark, Ohio) join the Falcons for the 2006-07 season ... each player has seen action in seven of BGSU's 10 games to date.
LEADERS OF THE MAC
The Falcons are at the top of numerous team categories in the latest Mid-American Conference statistics (as of Dec. 23) ... BGSU leads all league schools in scoring defense (53.9), scoring margin (+20.6), field-goal percentage (47.6), FG pct. defense (36.1), turnover margin (+5.70) and assist/turnover ratio (1.13) ... the Falcons are second in the league in scoring offense (74.5), three-point FG pct. (40.6), blocked shots (3.60), assists (16.30) and three-point field goals made (7.80) ... individually, senior Ali Mann leads the league in field-goal pct. (57.1), while classmate Liz Honegger ranks first in three-point FG pct. (50.0) and is tied for second in blocks (1.4) and deadlocked for fourth in three-pointers made (2.30).
HONEGGER SETS A(NOTHER) RECORD
It was only a matter of time before senior Liz Honegger became the Falcons' all-time record-holder in blocked shots .... and, for the Lafayette, Ind., native, the record came in her home state ... Honegger blocked four Notre Dame shot attempts (Nov. 13), moving her past Angie Bonner (155) into first place on the BG list ... Honegger now has 164 career blocks, and owns all of the BGSU records ... she set the single-game record as a freshman, and has tied or broken the school season marks - both overall and in MAC games - in each of her first three seasons ... not surprisingly, she is on pace to shatter the BG career mark for blocks per game.
HONEGGER IN A CLASS BY HERSELF
Liz Honegger is making her mark as one of the top players in school history, and one of the most versatile ... she has accomplished something that no other BGSU -- or MAC -- player has ever done ... Honegger is the only player in MAC history to block at least 125 shots and make at least 125 three-point field goals in her career ... she enters the Delaware game with totals of 174 treys and 164 rejections ... only two other players in MAC annals reached as many as 100 in both categories (Stephanie Smiley [Eastern Michigan, 1998-2002], 174 3's, 103 blocks; Tamara Bowie [Ball State, 2000-03], 100 3's, 152 blocks).
FLYNN, HONEGGER AND MANN TO CAPTAIN FALCONS
A trio of seniors - Amber Flynn, Liz Honegger and Ali Mann - have been named tri-captains of the 2006-07 Falcons ... the three were selected in a vote of team members as well as coaching staff ... Mann is a second-year captain, having been a unanimous selection last year as a junior.
RUNNING WITH THE FALCONS
The Falcons had a 10-0 run in each half in the win at St. Bonaventure ... BGSU had at least one run of 10 points or more during each of the season's first eight games ... BGSU reeled off 16-straight points in the season opener at Detroit, a run that was larger than any the Falcons had during all of the 2005-06 season ... although the Falcons did not have a double-digit run in either the Duke or the Texas-Arlington games, BG did hold fourth-ranked Duke off the scoreboard for nearly nine minutes in the first half ... the Falcons have had 14 double-digit scoring runs this year to date, after having a total of 15 during all of last season.
THOR, GODDESS OF THREE-POINTERS
Twice in the span of less than a week, senior Megan Thorburn had an uber-successful night from beyond the three-point line ... at Notre Dame (Nov. 13), 'Thor' made her first three long-range attempts en route to a career night beyond the arc ... she was 5-of-6 from three-point land, scoring a total of 17 points vs. the Irish ... just five days later, Thorburn went 5-for-7 from long distance vs. FDU, tying her newly-set career best for successful treys ... Thorburn has made 14 triples this season, good for third on the team ... she is 14-for-32 from long range, for a 43.8% rate.
HONEGGER HITS FROM LONG RANGE AS WELL
Megan Thorburn is not the only Falcon senior with a successful three-point field-goal rate this season to date ... Liz Honegger, who just became the school's career leader in that category, has made exactly 50.0% of her attempts this season, having gone 22-for-44 from beyond the arc ... and, Ali Mann is 11-for-23 from long distance this year, good for a 47.8% success rate ... it should be noted somewhere (and why not note it here?) that junior Kate Achter very nearly made the first three-point field goal of her Falcon career on the Cancun trip ... Achter, in fact, did sink a triple try as the shot clock was winding down ... but, it was waved off as an offensive foul was called on a BG teammate away from the ball.
MORE POSSIBLE MILESTONES FOR HONEGGER AND MANN
Senior Liz Honegger will leave BGSU as the school's all-time leader in both blocked shots and three-point field goals made ... Honegger and classmate Ali Mann are moving up some other lists as well ... as mentioned earlier, the two are ranked on the BG career list for games started, with a chance to pass the current record-holder ... Honegger is second in three-point field goals attempted, with 480 ... she trails Kim Griech by just 11 ... senior Carin Horne (426) is fifth on that list, by the way ... Mann is ranked third in both free throws made (393) and attempted (545), with a chance to assume first place on both lists before the year is done ... and, both Honegger and Mann are poised to add their names to the BGSU career rebounding list as well.
UP NEXT
Approximately 37 hours after the Delaware game ends, the Falcons will be back on the court at Anderson Arena ... BGSU will host Robert Morris in a Dec. 31 game, beginning at 1:00 p.m. ... then, the Falcons head to the Rubber City to begin the Mid-American Conference schedule with a Wednesday (Jan. 3) game at Akron.
