BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The men's soccer team survived the recent winter weather elements cleaning sections of their adopted highway. The area stretches from mile 179 to 180.5 on Interstate 75 or from the end of Route 6 to Wooster St. in Bowling Green.
Monday, the team outlasted temperatures that fell to 25 degrees and were reported to feel more like 12 degrees. The winds were reported at 17 miles per hour. The rating did not account for the speed of the passerby automobiles on the highway.
"We are happy to give back to the community because our commitment to this project reflects the commitment of the community to this University and our program," said head coach Fred Thompson. "Plus, I believe the players are being taught a lesson in character and humility as they give back to the city of Bowling Green."
The Falcons visit their site once every three to four months. During their latest visit on Monday, the Orange and Brown collected over sixty bags of trash.
Since 1989, more than over 1,800 volunteers have joined forces through the Ohio Department of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway Program to help beautify Ohio by picking up litter along state highways. Each year, more than 200,000 bags of trash are collected from Ohio's highways.
The Adopt-A-Highway Program also allows ODOT work crews more time to devote to its core functions, including road maintenance and construction projects. In District 6, it means approximately thousands of miles of roadway, 147 rest areas, and 11 Travel Information Centers that ODOT crews do not have to spend as much time on in terms of litter pickup.
Each Adopt-A-Highway group saves ODOT approximately $800 in litter pickup costs per year. By volunteering to clean a two-mile stretch of highway, four times a year, individuals are caring for the environment, their community, and helping to minimize ODOT's maintenance cost.
