FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Bowling Green State University hockey team surrendered four unanswered goals Friday night to Alaska Fairbanks, en route to 4-3 loss inside the Carlson Center. Nine different Falcons recorded points in the loss.
"We got off to a good start, but I think UAF did a good job of rebounding and realizing it is a 60 minute game," said head coach Scott Paluch. "I thought it was an extremely even game, where both teams competed hard and Chad Johnson came in and did a terrific job."
BGSU (13-17-1, 8-14-1 CCHA) spent 1,320 minutes (22 hours) on the road traveling to Fairbanks, Alaska on Wednesday, but took less then two minutes to score the games opening two goals of the contest on Friday.
Sophomore Jonathan Matsumoto opened the scoring just 1:04 into the first as he skated just across the blueline and fired a wrister past UAF's Wylie Rogers. Senior Don Morrison and freshman Brandon Svendsen assisted on the goal.
Fifty-five seconds later sophomore Michael Hodgson scored his second goal of the year 1:59 into the first, scoring from just inside the blueline, firing a shot through traffic. Freshman Kevin Schmidt fed the puck over to Hodgson, after sophomore John Mazzei won the faceoff.
With Bowling Green scoring on their first two goals of the night, UAF pulled Rogers and brought it freshman Chad Johnson. Johnson played a terrific game, stopping 38-of-39 shots on the night to give the Nanooks time to regroup.
Four straight Nanook goals, one in the first and all three goals in the second period, gave UAF a 4-2 advantage heading into the third.
The final 20 minutes BGSU held a 20-7 shot advantage, including sophomore Derek Whitmore's 13th goal of the season, just 1:33 into the third period on the power play. Sophomore Mike Nesdill and senior Brett Pilkington picked up helpers.
But that is as close as the Falcons would get, despite firing 15 shots in the final 12 minutes of the game, including two in the final 1:35 with Horrell on the bench for the extra attacker.
On the night senior Jon Horrell picked up 29 saves, while UAF's Johnson had 38. BGSU was 1-for-4 on the power play, while UAF was 1-for-5.
These same two teams will do it again tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. local time, or 11:00 p.m. Eastern time. Tune into 88.1 with Andy Evans for all the action.
