Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State junior center Matt Lefeld was named first-team Academic All-District by CoSIDA and is now eligible for selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American team which will be selected later in March.
To be eligible a player must be a starter or important reserve and have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better. Lefeld and Western Michigan's Joe Reitz (3.77, Finance) are the only MAC players on the District IV squad which represents all Division I schools in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Michigan. Others on the squad include Brian Thornton of Xavier (3.6, MBA), Zac Schlader of Austin Peay (3.71, Health), and Justin Hare of Belmont (3.81, Exercise Science).
Lefeld holds a 3.96 GPA in purchasing and supply management and is looking to become the first men's basketball player to earn Academic All-American honors since Steve Martenet was recognized as a third-team selection in 1988.
Lefeld is arguably one of the most improved players in the MAC. Last year, he scored just 14 points, but this year is averaging 8.1 points and 3.7 rebounds and is tied for the team lead in blocked shots with 14. He scored a season-high 19 points against Northern Illinois earlier this season. He has started 20 games.
