BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team dives back into MAC action this weeekend with a three-game series at Akron. The Falcons and Zips kick things off on Friday, April 21st at 3 PM inside Lee Jackson Field.
Bowling Green (20-15, 8-4 MAC) holds a 22-19 advantage over Akron (7-25, 2-10 MAC) in the all-time series. Just under the halfway point in the MAC season, the Falcons are tied for the MAC East Division lead with Kent State at 8-4 and trail Central Michigan (9-3) by one game for the overall conference lead.
Late Game Rally
The Falcons trailed by two runs heading into the bottom of the eighth inning against Cleveland State on April 19th. Freshman Chris Gacom trimmed the lead to one by scoring off an infield single by Junior Eric Lawson in the eighth. Freshman Brian Hangbers then calmly delivered a one-hopper off the left-field wall, an RBI-double knotting the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth. A Viking throwing error later allowed the winning run to cross home plate and hand the Falcons the 5-4 win.

Checking Out the MAC Stats
Several Falcon players find themselves among the statisitical league leaders in the Mid-American Conference. Junior Eric Lawson's .497 on-base percentage is the highest in the league, and the second baseman also ranks second in batting average and walks. Junior Alan Brech owns the third best earned run average in the conference at 1.93.
Shay Wins MAC Honors
Freshman Ryan Shay was been named the MAC East Player of the Week after leading the Falcons to a 3-1 record, including a weekend sweep over the arch rival Toledo Rockets. In the Toledo series, Shay drove home at least one run in each game, totaling four RBI for the weekend.
The Garden City, Michigan native batted .417 with two doubles and four RBI during the week. Shay's hitting was not only high in quantity, but also high in quality as he picked up a number of clutch hits during the sweep over Toledo.
