The Falcons, coached by seventh-year head coach Garry Winger, have had some very impressive showings this season. They opened the season with a John Piper Intercollegiate title, outplaying 11 other squads. In that tournament they set a school record for 18-holes (275), 36-holes (562) and 54-holes (845). They finished the tournament 19 strokes under par as a team.
Just this past weekend they finished in a tie for fifth at the First Energy Intercollegiate, including a team score of 286 in round two, their second-best performance this season. This past weekend they fell 29 strokes shy of Ball State and 11 of Kent State, but outmatched Akron, Northern Illinois and Ohio.
BGSU is led by fifth-year senior Heath Ziglar. The Orlando, Florida native is tops on the team and ranks ninth in the MAC with a 73.88 stroke average. Just this past weekend the senior posted a 213 (71-70-72) at the First Energy Intercollegiate. It was the second time this season he had posted three straight par or better scores in the same tournament. This season Ziglar has posted six rounds under par, including a 5-under, 67, at the John Piper Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Jace Walker is second on the team with a 74.33 stroke average, which ranks 13th in the MAC. His best finish this season came at the John Piper Intercollegiate where he finished fourth overall with a 1-under, 213. Walker has five rounds under par, including a career-best 69 at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic earlier this season.
Last season Tommy Lopez finished tied for fifth at the MAC Championships after firing a 284 (72-72-71-69). The 69 matched his career-best. This season the fifth-year senior is averaging 76.52 strokes per round. His best finish this season was a 217 (76-69-72) at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invite, where he placed 31st.
Junior Dan McIntyre has competed in all 33 rounds this season for the Falcons, while averaging 75.21 strokes per 18 holes. His top performance this season was at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invite where he carded a 69 and 66 in the first two rounds of the tournament. This season alone he has five rounds under par.
