CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University softball student-athlete Allison Vallas has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office has announced. Vallas earns the honor for the first time in her BGSU career.
Vallas, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio (Perrysburg H.S.), led the Falcons in hitting last week, with a .438 batting average as BGSU went 3-1 on the road to close the regular season. She had seven hits in 16 at-bats in the Falcons' four games, a split with eventual MAC champs Western Michigan and a sweep of Northern Illinois.
On the weekend, Vallas scored four runs and had five RBI, with a slugging percentage of .563. The outfielder went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the second game at WMU on Friday (May 5), also stealing a base in that game. Then, she had two hits, a run and two RBI in the Falcons' 12-inning win at Northern Saturday night (May 6).
Then, on Sunday, Vallas was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI in a 10-1, five-inning victory over the Huskies. She entered the MAC Tournament with a batting average of .301 on the season, good for third on the team. In MAC play, she batted .312 on the year.
BGSU finished the regular season with a 35-21 record, and the Falcons went 16-6 in MAC action to finish second in the East Division (one half-game out of first) and earn the third overall seed for this week's MAC Tournament.
Vallas, an education major, maintains a perfect 4.00 grade-point average.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
