MIDLAND, Mich. - Bowling Green State University senior pitcher Liz Vrabel has been named to the Mid-American Conference Softball All-Tournament Team. The announcement was made following Saturday's (May 13) league tourney championship game at Currie Stadium.
Vrabel, BGSU's lone selection to the MAC's all-tourney team, earns the honor for the second consecutive year. She is the lone player in school history to be named to the MAC All-Tournament Team on multiple occasions.
A native of Allison Park, Pa., Vrabel had a 2-0 record and a perfect 0.00 earned-run average in the 2006 league tourney. She picked up both of BGSU's victories, with complete-game shutouts of Akron on Wednesday (May 10) and Ohio on Friday (May 12).
In her career, Vrabel had a MAC Tournament record of 6-3, and an ERA of just 0.47, having allowed only four earned runs in 59 career innings in league tourney play.
Over the last three seasons, Vrabel went 5-1 with an ERA of only 0.18 in MAC Tournament action, having allowed only one earned run in 40 innings of action over those three seasons in the conference tourney.
On the season, Vrabel had an overall record of 18-10, a 1.49 ERA and a total of 193 strikeouts. Her strikeout total is the second highest in a season in BGSU history. Vrabel set the record last spring, with 237 strikeouts in 2005, and owns four of the top-five single-season K totals in school history. She was named to the All-MAC Second Team, earning all-league honors for the fourth consecutive season.
Vrabel ended her star-studded career in the Brown and Orange as the career leader in wins, strikeouts, strikeouts per seven innings, shutouts and appearances. Her 67 wins broke the previous school mark by 11, and her 768 career strikeouts is the third-highest total in MAC history.
The Falcons finished with an overall record of 37-23 on the season, tying the school mark for wins. BGSU went 16-6 in MAC play and 2-2 in the league tournament. The Falcons' two MAC Tournament losses each came by a single run to the teams that advanced to the championships.
The third-seeded Falcons lost to second-seeded Kent State by a 3-2 count, and were knocked out of the tourney by top-seeded Western Michigan, 2-1. On Saturday afternoon, KSU downed WMU, 2-1, in the championship game.
Vrabel was joined on the all-tourney team by KSU's Brittney Robinson, Kim Hamilton, Jessica Toocheck and Jamie Fitzpatrick, WMU's Krysten Shumaker, Katie Niemi and Kristi Strange and Eastern Michigan's Nikki Denman and Lauren Clark. Robinson was named the tournament MVP.
