BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In their opening meet against archrival Toledo, the women's cross country team came away with a 19 to 37 victory over the Rockets. The men's score of 30 was just shy of Toledo's 25 points, earning the Rockets the victory.
For the women's team, it was junior Jamie Roflow who set the pace for the entire race. With a good lead on teammate Kim Settle, Roflow easily crossed the finish line in a time of 18:05. This is the third year in a row that Roflow has won the dual race.
"The women raced very well," said head coach Cami Wells. "We still have quite a bit of work to do to close up the gaps between runners. Jamie did a great job by herself and it's the third year in a row she's won the dual."
Settle out sprinted Toledo's Nicole Camp at the finish line to come in second with a time of 18:32, a new personal-best for the junior. This was Settle's best finish as a Falcon. Stephanie Hillman was the next Falcon across the finish line in fourth place with a time of 18:54. "It was pretty windy today and Kim Settle set a personal best," said Wells. "It's her best finish as a Falcon and I am extremely pleased with it."
Following Hillman was newcomer Carly Bates, who made an impressing first showing for the Orange and Brown. She came in fifth with a time of 19:21.
Bridget Dalic raced to a seventh place finish in a time of 19:54 while freshman Andrea Pereira de Almeida finished twelfth with a time of 20:18.
Behind Pereira de Almeida was sophomore Kara Butler who finished in a time of 20:22. Following Butler was Paige Lane (20:42), Emily Gallagher (20:50), Andrea Pollack (20:52), Angela Raizis (20:06), Lauren Zielke (20:09) and Katy Senn (21:27).
"I thought all the people that had a Toledo runner at the end caught them and it was great to see them finish strong," said Wells.
In the men's race, it was freshman Eddie Kipchoge who ran away with the victory in a time of 15:29. This is the first time the Falcons have not had Rogers Kipchumba as their number one runner. Kipchoge's nearest competitor was fellow newcomer and teammate Brad Wells, who finished 30 seconds later with a time of 15:59.
"I am very happy with Eddie and Brad," said Wells. "The plan was to get out and under control. I think they were hoping for faster times but when the wind kicked in a little bit they didn't quite get the times they wanted. They are certainly in a position to good things for the team in the future."
Toledo ran in with the next five competitors and then the Orange and Brown's Kipchumba finished eighth with a time of 16:42.
The Falcons finished off the race with the next five runners. Kevin Kaighin was ninth with at time of 16:56. Edgar Ramirez followed in tenth place with a time of 17:12. Up next for the Falcons was Curtis Farnsel with a time of 17:16, finishing eleventh.
The final two runners to cross the finish line for the Orange and Brown was Hillary Maiyo, who ran a time of 17:43, and Kyle Kilbane, crossing the line at 18:08.
The Falcons will return to action on September 16 at the 20th Annual Mel Brodt Invitational.
