BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University has announced the hiring of Susan Sargent as assistant softball coach. Sargent assumes a full-time assistant position after spending the 2005-06 academic year as a volunteer assistant coach with the program.
Sargent, a native of Logan, Ohio, was officially hired in late August, just before Falcon head coach Leigh Ross and top assistant Kyle Jamieson were hired for similar positions at Syracuse University. Sargent will serve as the second assistant under BGSU's new softball coach. A search is currently underway for the head-coaching position, and is expected to be concluded in the next few weeks.
"Susan was a strong addition to our softball coaching staff last season," said BGSU Associate A.D. Janna Blais, the athletic department's senior woman administrator. "During this time of transition, Susan's knowledge of, familiarity and experience with the Falcon softball program will be beneficial to the new head coach as well as the student-athletes."
In her first season on the staff, Sargent helped the 2006 Falcons post a 37-win campaign, tying the school record for victories. The Brown and Orange went 37-23 overall, and finished 16-6 in the MAC, good for a second-place finish in the East Division, just a half-game out of first.
"I am grateful for this opportunity," said Sargent. "Last year was a wonderful learning experience, and I am happy to continue to be a part of the Falcon family."

Sargent had a batting average of .409 in OAC play during her freshman year. As a senior in 2004, she led the team with a .317 average in all games, and was named to the OAC All-Tournament Team.
In the summer of 2003, Sargent worked at the Queensland Softball Association in Brisbane, Australia. In July of that year, she was named an assistant coach for the New South Wales All-Star Team.
Sargent, a 2000 graduate of Logan H.S., earned her degree in sport management from ONU in 2004. She graduated from BGSU in December of 2005, with a master's degree in sport administration.
Jamieson is remaining with the Falcon softball program through the fall schedule. He and Sargent will lead the team through fall practices and tournaments. BGSU's first tournament of the fall is this weekend (Sept. 16-17) at Carter Park in Bowling Green.
Once the new head coach is hired, he or she will have the opportunity to hire an assistant coach to fill the vacant position left by Jamieson.
