BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team put the wraps on a successful opening weekend Sunday (Sept. 17), as the Falcons had three singles champions and one title-winning doubles team at the BGSU Invitational. The two-day, eight-team tournament was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
Senior Ashley Jakupcin, sophomore Stefanie Menoff and freshman Samantha Kintzel all captured singles crowns, while Menoff and Kintzel also teamed to win a doubles title. BGSU's three singles titles and four overall championships topped all schools.
In addition to the Falcons, Akron, Cleveland State, Dayton, UIC, Toledo, Xavier and Youngstown State also competed in the BGSU Invitational. Team scores were not kept.
Jakupcin won the title at the top singles flight. After wins over UA's Tanya Gombera and CSU's Sarah Galon to reach the final, Jakupcin won by default over UT's Myriam Cueva to take the title.
Menoff cruised to her title at the sixth flight. She lost a total of only three games in her two Saturday wins, and dropped only five games to XU's Annie Diedalis (6-3, 6-2) in Sunday's championship.
Kintzel defeated Falcon teammate Libby Harrison in three sets in the seventh-flight championship, rebounding to take the match after losing the first set by a 6-1 score.
Jakupcin's sister, Kelsey, finished third at the third flight, while Andrea Volle posted a third-place finish at flight number four. In the fifth flight, freshman Katia Babina lost her opening match in three sets, but rebounded for a pair of wins to capture the back draw. Babina downed Amy Sherlock of Akron in a 10-7 super-tiebreaker after each player had won a set.
In doubles, the Menoff/Kintzel duo downed CSU's team of Vogelgesang/Muntean by a narrow 8-6 score to capture the flight-three championship. Volle and Harrison lost to Xavier's Zinn/Diedalis tandem by an 8-5 outcome in the championship contest at the fourth flight.
The Falcons are now idle for several weeks, with the team's next competition coming on Oct. 8-10 at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Northwestern.
