Men's Golf Opens Season On Monday

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's golf program opens their 2006 fall season on Monday as they travel to Cleveland, Ohio, for the Cleveland State Invitational (Sept. 11-12). As a team the Falcons return three seniors, three juniors a sophomore and four freshmen.
Competing at this weekend's tournament will be Jace Walker, Trevor Spathelf, Matt Schneider, Andrew Ladwig and Brad Dearsman.
Walker was second on last year's squad and is the top Falcon returnee with a 74.35 average. He recorded four rounds of under par and added another five rounds of even par last season. His best finish of the year came at the John Piper Intercollegiate (Bowling Green, Ohio) where he finished fourth with a 213 (71-68-74).
Spathelf scored a 76.74 average last season with four sub-72 rounds, including a career-best 69 at the First Energy Intercollegiate, where he finished 23rd. He also had strong finishes at the Earl Yestingmeier Invite (T-21st) and the Big East/MAC Challenge (T-27th).
Schneider and Ladwig are just two of the new faces on this year's team. Schneider captured the Minnesota State Junior Golf Championships last season after carding a 139 (67-72). This fall, while qualifying for this weekend's tournament Schneider recorded a low of 67 and had an average of 73.3 for six rounds.
Ladwig, an East Grand Rapid, Michigan, earned all-state honors in 2003 and 2004. Last season he finished second at the 2005 AJGA Fidelity Shootout at Rich Harvest Farms and was named to the 2005 MHSAA Dream Team. Ladwig finished qualifying with a 74.80 average and a low of 71 in six rounds.
The fifth and final competitor this weekend will be senior Brad Dearsman. Dearsman finished third at last season John Piper Intercollegiate (72-69-71--212), and finished the year with a 77.42 stroke average.
Other Falcons that are expected to see action this fall include senior Dan McIntyre (75.51 average), Russell Goodwin (77.17 average), Charles Seguin (75.33 average), Michael Bibler (did not see action last season) and a pair of freshman in John Powers and Scott Blackburn.
Following Monday's tournament in Cleveland the Falcons return home to host the 2006 John Piper Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19), a tournament the Falcons won last season.
