The Bowling Green State University gymnastics squad will return home Saturday (Jan. 20) to host the defending Mid-American Conference champions Western Michigan. The meet will begin at 7:00 p.m. inside the Eppler Complex.
Last week the Falcons fell in their MAC opener to Eastern Michigan 188.925-192.475, however they did get a win over non-conference opponent, Ursinus College, 178.950. The team was led by their senior co-captain, Sakura Tomita, who had an impressive score of 9.775 and a first place finish on bars. She was followed up by, junior Jholeen Ponce, who finished fourth on both vault (9.650) and bars (9.550).
Jacque Bernhardt landed a great vault giving her a third place finish of 9.750. She is currently in fifth place for vault scores in the MAC. Tomita and Ashlee deLeeuw are fifth and eighth, respectively, in MAC bars standings with their scores of 9.775 and 9.750 respectively.
Bucking the Broncos
Last week, WMU was defeated by Kent State, 193.100-187.625. Seniors, Jennifer Sturgis, and Shelby Gribeck led the Broncos in scoring. Sturgis finished second on vault with 9.725, while Gribeck tied for second on beam scoring a 9.750. Overall, the Falcons lead the series 21-7-1. Last year the Falcons were defeated at WMU 187.325-190.100.
On the Road Again
After the home meet against the Broncos, the Falcons will hit the road to compete at Northern Illinois on Sat. January 28, at 2:00 p.m. Following NIU, the Orange and Brown will return to Eppler to host Ball State, Feb. 3 (Sat.) at 7:00 p.m.
