BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team continues a four-match road swing to open dual-match play. Head coach Penny Dean and the Falcons head to the Windy City for a pair of contests this weekend, meeting the University of Illinois at Chicago on Saturday (Jan. 20) and DePaul University the following morning.
Saturday's UIC match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. Eastern) at Evergreen Racquet and Fitness. The Falcons have won the last three matches vs. the Flames, including a 6-1 decision at Shadow Valley in Toledo last year (Feb. 19, 2006). UIC has qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the last eight seasons.
Sunday's DePaul contest is slated for a 10:00 a.m. local (11:00 a.m. Eastern) start at the Five Season Racquet Club. BGSU met the Blue Demons in neutral-site action last Feb. 5, as the teams met in Indianapolis, Ind. DU picked up a 7-0 win over the Brown and Orange, and the Devils went on to post a 16-8 dual-match record on the season. The teams are meeting in dual play for the 10th consecutive year.
Four of the nine Falcons are natives of Illinois. Junior Jenna Nussbaum, sophomore Stefanie Menoff and freshmen Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel all will be returning to their home state for this weekend's matches.
The Falcons are coming off a narrow 4-3 win at the University of Cincinnati last Friday night (Jan. 12). The Bearcats took two-of-three doubles matches to garner the doubles point, which proved to be important, as the Falcons and UC then split the six singles matches.
That UC match, a late addition to the schedule, was the Falcons' dual-match opener as well as the first match of the spring semester for the Brown and Orange.
Following this weekend's two matches in Chicago, the Falcons will head to Columbus for a Jan. 27 match vs. Ohio State. The following day (Jan. 28), BGSU will face Youngstown State in a 1:00 p.m. match at Shadow Valley.
