FALCONS ON THE ROAD AGAIN AT KENT STATE
Bowling Green and Kent State will meet for the 137th time when they square off Saturday evening. The Falcons are in a stretch where they will have played eight of their last 11 away from home since December 16. The Falcons fell at Miami, 66-60, on Wednesday night. Kent State is coming off a 78-68 loss at Akron. BGSU has won three of the last four meetings in Kent capturing a 79-74 contest a year ago. BGSU also won at KSU, 77-73, in 2005 and 78-74, in 2003.
MILLER HAS BEEN A FORCE
Since becoming eligible on December 19, sophomore Nate Miller has give the Falcons additional scoring inside. He is averaging 13 points and 6.8 rebounds. He is coming off a career-high 21-point performance against Miami where he made eight of 11 field goal attempts. In MAC play, he is averaging 16.5 points and 5.8 rebounds and leads the conference in steals at 3.33 per game in MAC games only. Miller also had 19 points and 10 rebounds against Marshall, 17 points at Ohio and 15 points and seven rebounds against Akron. He came to BGSU after playing one semester at UNC-Wilmington. He is a graduate of Springfield South High School.
DAKICH HAS SECOND BEST WINNING PERCENTAGE AT BGSU, NOW 10TH ALL-TIME IN WINS BY A MAC COACH
BGSU Coach Dan Dakich is in his 10th season with the Falcons and was the second fastest men's basketball coach in school history to win 100 games. He is 153-129 (54.4) overall (second-best in BGSU history) and is 87-79 (52.8) in the MAC. With the win against Jacksonville State, he surpassed Western Michigan's Bob Donewald to move into 10th place in overall victories by a MAC coach. He ranks 12th all-time in MAC history in league wins. His four 18+win seasons are tied for second most by a Falcon coach as he notched those in his first eight seasons after BGSU had posted just four 18+win seasons in the previous 14 seasons prior to his arrival. Since the 2001 season, BGSU is 32-3 when allowing 60 points or less, including 4-0 this season. With the defensive stop on the last play of the game against Buffalo, BGSU is now 29-5 since the 2001-02 season when holding a one possession lead in the final minute of a game.
A former player at Indiana (1981-85), Dakich spent 11 seasons on the staff of the Hoosiers under the NCAA's all-time leader in victories, Coach Bob Knight. Dakich was an assistant coach for 262 of Knight's record setting 880+ collegiate wins.
SOME NOTES FROM THE MIAMI GAME
The Falcons shot 56.5% from the field in the second half and tied its MAC season-high with six blocked shots. Freshman Otis Polk made his second career start, had a career-high six points and tied his career best with three blocked shots. He also made all three of his field goal attempts. He is averaging 2.3 blocks per game in MAC play. Sophomore Darryl Clements had a season-high eight points and added two assist and a blocked shot. He is averaging 7.0 points in the last two games. Sophomore Brian Guerin had eight points and tied his career-high with three field goals made. He is averaging 6.5 points and 3.9 assists in MAC play while shooting 80% from the field in the league. Sophomore Erik Marschall had a career-high four steals. Marschall is averaging 5.7 points and 3.0 rebounds since returning from injury. He has made 61.5% of his field goal attempts. Freshman Marc Larson made his third start of the season.
MAC GAMES ONLY
The Falcons lead the league in blocked shots averaging 4.75 per game. Sophomore Nate Miller is averaging a league-high 3.33 steals per contest. Sophomore Brian Guerin is the top three-point shooter making 80.0% of his attempts. Guerin also has the best assist/turnover ratio at 3.75.
KENT STATE NOTES
The Golden Flashes are 5-1 at home this season and are led by a pair of seniors. Guard Omni Smith is averaging 14.6 points and 4.1 assists. Guard Armon Gates is averaging 10.3 points and has made all 18 of his free throw attempts. Junior Mike Scott is contributing 9.8 points and a team-high 5.9 rebounds, while junior transfer Haminn Quantance is chipping in 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds.
