CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University men's basketball standout Matt Lefeld has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office has announced.
Lefeld (center, Sr., 3.94, supply chain management, Coldwater, Ohio) had a rebound and a blocked shot in six minutes at Ohio. He then grabbed three rebounds in the Falcons' home game versus Akron. On the season, Lefeld is averaging 4.3 points and 2.3 rebounds. He has played in all 16 of BGSU's games to date, making 10 starts. The Falcons were 10-6 overall and 1-2 in MAC play at the time of nomination.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Other Male Nominees:
Buffalo: Rayshon Higgins (track & field, jumps, Sr., 3.12, social sciences/legal studies, Buffalo, N.Y.) won the men's triple jump at 47-1.50 (14.36m) at the season-opening Doug Raymond Invitational at Kent State. The leap established an IC4A qualifying distance for Higgins, last season's MAC champion in the event. He also placed second behind teammate Roy Richards in the men's long jump with a leap of 22-7 (6.88m).
Eastern Michigan: Dan Wohl (swimming & diving, Sr., 3.24, sports medicine, Sandusky, Ohio) helped the Eagles to two victories with four first-place finishes. Wohl finished first in the 100-yard butterfly in EMU's 139- 80 win against IUPUI. The following day, he posted the top time in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM as the Eagles defeated Ball State, 135.5-99.5. The conference victory marked the 45th consecutive regular-season dual meet victory for the Eagles. EMU has been perfect in conference action the past eight seasons and has not lost a league meet since the 1997-98 campaign.
Toledo: Justin Ingram (basketball, guard, Sr., 3.050, communication, Lansing, Mich.) averaged 22.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game and shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from three-point range to lead the Rockets to a pair of wins over Central Michigan (65-60) and Western Michigan (80-68). The two victories extended UT's conference win streak to 10 games dating back to last season. Ingram paced UT with 18 points in their road win over the Chippewas and hit a pair of late free throws to secure the win. He then followed that up against the Broncos with his best scoring output ever in a MAC game with 26 points to go along with five assists, four rebounds and four steals. He shot 8-of-14 from the field 5-of-8 from three-point range.
Western Michigan: Shawntes Gary (men's basketball, guard, So., 3.09, pre-physical education, Elkhart, Ind.) scored in double digits in two games for the Broncos, while tying and setting career-highs. Gary recorded 12 points and six rebounds in a victory over Ball State to help the Broncos remain undefeated at home this season (5-0). He also tied a career-high with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting and set a career-high with nine rebounds against Toledo.
