BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) -
BGSU HEAD COACH Curt Miller
"Despite making three field goals in the last nine minutes of the game, I was ecstatic with our win today. I thought we thoroughly dominated, and our starters played a great game. We came out of halftime with a big lead and added to that. It was one of the few times I have come out of a game feeling like we totally dominated in every aspect of the game."
(On moving Kate Achter to the 2-guard position)
"We've talked about it for years, and I've never had the guts to do it. With the recent injuries to Carin Horne, and not knowing how many minutes she can give us from day to day, we needed to sneak a few more minutes from everyone at the wing. We experimented with it in practice, and Kate had a great practice at the 2 the other day. Kate and Jazz (McCall) are both attacking guards, and I've been reluctant to try it. I've talked about it for a long time, and I think you could see the advantages of having them both on the floor at the same time."
(On Kate's crossover dribble drive for a layup at the end of the first half, and the emotion that she showed)
"Our last two road games were 'grind-it-out' victories, and we were really pleased to come away with wins. Besides the fact that it was a grind, though, I didn't feel like we had the emotion and cameraderie that we have become accustomed to having. So, we challenged each and every kid, 'no matter what your role might be, what are you bringing to the table?' Even if a kid hasn't played yet (in a particular game), she can bring us a spark off the bench. I thought all 11 kids that played did that today. I think you saw the BG team that we are used to seeing today. There was a lot of cheering, a lot of energy and a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes into making a good team."
"We missed some shots we are capable of making, but it was a point of emphasis that we needed to get on the boards today. Even though we struggled making field goals down the stretch, we got a lot of second opportunities. That's a credit to our team, not playing the score, but playing hard when you're out there, no matter the minutes you're given."
Certainly, we were not perfect today, and certainly, we have a lot of things we need to work on. But, today we looked healthier that we have been, we played with more enthusiasm, and we played better. It's not perfect, but even for me, the last two games were draining. I think we all felt the pressure, and I think we're all excited that we played better today."
(Carin only played 14 minutes, but she sure seemed to get the most out of those minutes)
"I was really happy for her. The lead allowed me to rest her; if it had been a closer game, she would have played more. I was most proud that she had four offensive rebounds in a very short amount of time. That is great production. And, she was guarding Sharonda Hurd, who came into the game as the leading offensive rebounder in the league. So, for the last 48 hours, Carin had to hear about how good a rebounder Sharonda Hurd was. I think Carin took it upon herself to show me and show her teammates that she is as good an offensive rebound as there is in the league. And again, today was just a maintenance thing. If it was a closer game, Carin definitely could have played more minutes today."
JUNIOR GUARD Kate Achter
(Was today kind of a relief for you, to get back to playing the way you are capable?)
"Yes, very much so. I had two pretty good days of practice. We experimented a little bit, moving me to the 2, and I think that got my confidence back up; going to the basket and attacking. Coach (Jennifer) Roos made me do this drill where she hit me; she took a baseball swing at me with a blue pad, so that I would have to finish with contact. I think that really helped me out a lot today."
(When was the last time you played the 2?)
"Our major emphasis today was to play together, as a team. When we played at Ohio and Miami, we were a little frustrated because we couldn't get things to click. We couldn't get shots to fall, we couldn't get the shots we wanted. So, the major emphasis this week was on playing together as a team, and playing like we know how to play. A win's a win; no matter if it's by nine points or by 20 points. Coach Miller's not concerned with any of that; he was just concerned about doing what we do best, and that's playing BG basketball."
SENIOR CENTER Liz Honegger
"It was nice to be at home after being on the road the last couple games. It's going to be tough every night in this league. It was nice to get a lead today, and get everyone a chance to get some good minutes."
(How fun is it to watch Lindsey Goldsberry getting rebounds, diving all over the place, grabbing loose balls, and not having to feel it like you do in practice?)
"It's good for us, because we both can push the ball. I like it, because there isn't as much responsibility; I can just take off and get up the floor. It's good for Jazz as well; she gets a lot of experience at the point, too. (Coach Miller) just wanted to experiment a little bit, especially with Carin's injury, and we'll see; maybe there's some 2 in the future for me."
(On the emotion Kate Achter brings to the team)
"Kate is such a great leader, both on and off the floor, for us. She and Ali (Mann) bring great emotion, but when Kate gets going, she's got her fists pumping, and she hits my hands a little too hard sometimes. But, it's worth it, because energy like that gets us going."
"It was great. Goldsberry's always like that. I get annoyed with her sometimes in practice, because she will hit me or steal the ball from me. But, I love it when she does that stuff to other teams. Goldsberry is awesome; she's a warrior, and you know she is going to go after every loose ball. Thing like that are a big part of our success."
