CHICAGO, Ill. (BGSUFalcons.com) -
Curt Miller POST-GAME QUOTES
"I thought Chicago State played very well against us and made us execute. You've always got to find ways to grind it out on the road, and Chicago State is a very talented team that people don't know much about. I don't think our prep time hurt us, but we had to turn around and practice at 6:30 in the morning (Monday) after the game at Eastern Michigan. I felt like we had some tired legs tonight, but our seniors are warriors. They realized that this is a big final non-conference win to get, and it was a good overall team win."
(What did you say to your team at the half?)
"Well, I didn't think they (CSU) were doubling in the post all night. In the first half, we shot 50 percent from the field inside the arc. So, a point of emphasis was to continue to get the ball in the paint, if that's how they were going to defend us. I thought, overall, we did a nice job of getting isolated in the post for some one-on-one opportunities. Clearly, points in the paint was a huge statistic for us tonight."
(How did Kate Achter's having 3 fouls at halftime affect you?)
"As is always the case with people in foul trouble, they've got to stay aggressive. Once they get tentative, then they are going to foul more. You've got to stay aggressive, but you've also got to pick and choose your spots and you've got to be smart. We tried to steal some minutes around timeouts for her, and to her credit, she played a very smart second half; I believe she was able to go the rest of the night without getting another foul. Kate played a smart, heady game, but didn't lose her aggressiveness, and that was important for us."
(On Amber Flynn)
"I think Amber is the Sixth Man of the Year in our conference. It is a great one-two punch when she comes in for Liz Honegger. Honegger is your three-point shooter and space-eater. Amber Flynn gives you versatility, with the ability to drive by you, and she is a very good finisher inside. It gives us a different look when she comes in for Liz. Amber is the X-factor for this team, and may be the unsung hero as well."
(Were you wary of a letdown coming into tonight's game?)
"We have such a veteran team that I don't worry about that. But, I worried about fatigue. I worried about our emotion and our energy, which we are know for, being a little bit less tonight. But, again, they are a veteran team. They are not going to disrespect Chicago State -- Chicago State's too good for that, and it was a game on the road as well. But, I did worry about the fatigue factor."
(How does Ali Mann help your team's intensity?)
"It is such a staple of our program. The intensity, and the energy that our kids play with, is second to none. You don't see that in every program. And, Ali is certainly the leader of this team. That emotion is such a staple, and when we don't have it, we (coaches) need to bring that to their attention, because we are better when we play with emotion."
