AKRON, Ohio -
BGSU HEAD COACH Curt Miller
"We are 1-0 in the MAC, and we are glad to be there. I have so much respect for Jodi Kest; I think she is one of the elite coaches in the country, one of the best defensive coaches out there. She made us earn everything that we got tonight offensively. Fortunately, our kids, after that first four minutes, played a tremendous game defensively. But, hats off to Jodi and her staff and her kids. They were great defensively against us tonight. Our kids, though, just kept plugging away. It wasn't always pretty, but we did what we needed to do to move to 1-0."
(Where does this rank to you in terms of overall defensive efforts?)
"I think they scored eight points in the first four minutes, and then math tells me they had 24 in the next 36. I thought we stuck to the game plan. I felt that Sarah Tokodi was their key, and she got in foul trouble, which hurt them. I thought we did a decent job of keeping them off the foul line and making them earn their points. Overall, I'm really pleased. I thought it was a great defensive game, and I thought our three subs -- Jasmine McCall, Lindsey Goldsberry and Amber Flynn -- were tremendous defensively in the first half. We disrupted what they were trying to do."
"I think the lesson we can learn from tonight -- and we have to learn this -- is, when you've won 25-straight games against MAC opponents and you've won two-straight titles, people are going to be ready to play against you. I asked them, 'How fired up were we when we played Duke in the first four minutes?' And they said they had never felt like that before. And I said to them, 'That's how people have got to feel when Bowling Green comes to town right now, because they're tired of their coaches talking about Bowling Green.' I told them that we have to match that intensity, sustain that, and avoid digging a hole early. Akron is a physical team, they came out playing physical, and Jodi is as good a coach as there is. She will always have them ready, and when she gets more and more of her players into the program, watch out."
(On Carin Horne)
"She got hot in the first half, and when she does that, it's easy to call plays for her. She can create her own shot so well. She really carried us in the first half; she made some tough shots and gave us a cushion to work with at halftime. She made some good reads and got loose. As you know, she is very explosive, and she can have big nights."
SENIOR FORWARD Carin Horne
"We knew they were a good offensive team. We knew we just had to play good team defense and work together. If someone gets beat, someone else has to be there to help out. We did a pretty good job of playing team D tonight."
"We know we have to be ready to go every game. It is zero to zero every time we tip off, and we have to come out and play as hard as we can every game. We are a hard-nosed team; we have to keep working hard."
(On having played three games in six days)
"I think we're holding up pretty well. We practice each day, and our practices are just as hard as the games, so I think we are in good shape."
SENIOR FORWARD Ali Mann
"Our defense gets our offense going sometimes, and we are able to get some steals and turn them into easy points with transition buckets. Once we get going like that, the rest of our offense gets going as well."
(On Horne scoring baskets on four-straight first-half possessions)
"We needed that. We came out a little bit flat, and Akron came out shot out of a cannon and ready to go. Carin has the potential to take over every game, and she took over today during that stretch. When the ball's in her hands, I'm pretty confident. As long as she's taking shots, we're in good shape."
