BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team will conclude the fall portion of the 2007-08 schedule with a `split-squad' weekend. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will send several players to Ann Arbor, Mich., with the remainder of the team traveling to Muncie, Ind., this weekend.
Three members of the Falcons - senior Jenna Nussbaum, junior Kelsey Jakupcin and freshman Christine Chiricosta - will compete at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Midwest Women's Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. The remaining Falcons, including senior Andrea Volle, juniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff and sophomores Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel, will participate in the Ball State Fall Invitational.
The University of Michigan will host this year's Wilson/ITA Regionals, which will take place at the Varsity Tennis Center. The six-day event begins Thursday (Oct. 18) and runs through Tuesday (Oct. 23).
The event featured a 64-player singles qualifying draw, which begins on Thursday. Those 64 players will be competing for eight spots into the main draw, which commences on Saturday (Oct. 20). The 64-team doubles main draw begins on Friday (Oct. 19).
For the Falcons, Chiricosta and Jakupcin will be competing in singles, while the team of Jakupcin and Nussbaum will compete in doubles.
"We are welcoming the challenge of closing out our fall season with some tough competition at the ITA this weekend," said Dean, a U-M alum. "Jenna, Kelsey and Christine know that they have to be on top of their game, because the farther they go, the tougher the opposition will be. They are looking forward to this trip."
The Ball State Fall Invitational begins Friday evening (Oct. 19) and runs through Sunday (Oct. 21). In addition to the Falcons and the host Cardinals, fellow Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan will compete in the tournament.
The invitational will feature two flights of singles and one flight of doubles, and Dean looks forward to the opportunity for the entire Falcon team to see action at one venue or another this weekend.
"We scheduled this event with the plan of giving all of our players the opportunity for additional matches before the end of the fall season," said the head coach. "This will be good competition for us. It will give us a much better idea of where we stack up against two strong MAC program, and of what we need to accomplish before the conference schedule begins in the spring."
As mentioned, this weekend's events close the fall portion of the 2007-08 schedule for the Falcons. BGSU's next competition will come in January of 2008, at a tourney hosted by Indiana University.
