ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A pair of Bowling Green State University tennis standouts split their Thursday (Oct. 18) singles matches at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Junior Kelsey Jakupcin and freshman Christine Chiricosta each downed their respective first-round opponents, before seeing their singles runs ended in the second round.
The event, hosted by the University of Michigan, is being held at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Jakupcin opened play in the singles qualifying round on Thursday with a come-from-behind win over Marquette's Christina Ruiz. The Falcon junior lost the first set before rallying to win sets two and three on tiebreakers. Jakupcin was defeated by Kristina Minor of Illinois in the second round.
Chiricosta topped Kelly Drvaric of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in straight sets, losing only four games in the process, before being forced to retire in her second-round match against Purdue's Anna Dzeva.
Jakupcin and senior Jenna Nussbaum will begin play in the doubles main draw Friday (Oct. 19), taking on the University of Wisconsin duo of Mirnova/Nusslock.
