Falcons Down Arch-Rival Toledo, 3-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons matched up against arch-rival Toledo on the road putting their five match winning streak to the test and came out victorious. The Falcons started off slow dropping game one to the Rockets but found their groove coming back to win the next three straight beating the Rockets in four games (28-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-17). The Falcons dominated the net on offense hitting a .303 for night and keeping the Rockets to a .167.
The Falcons came out early putting together three three point runs in game one taking an 11-6 lead over the Rockets. Rockets fought to keep the Falcons within striking distance and took the lead 19-17 after a seven point Falcon run. The Rockets fired back right away with a three point run to take a 25-21 lead over the Falcons. The Falcons then answered back with their own three point run to come within one point 26-25. Toledo was able to hold their lead and win game one 30-28.
BGSU started game two taking an early 3-0 lead after a three point run started by a Kendra Halm kill. Toledo then went on their own three point run to tie the game up 3-3. Once the Falcons took a 7-4 lead they didn't let go of the lead the rest of game two. The Falcons pulled away from the Rockets extending their lead to 16-9 after a Falcon five point run. The Falcons stayed aggressive and after a four point run took their biggest lead of game two 26-16. The Falcons finished off the Rockets in game two, 30-19. The Falcons out hit the Rockets in game two with 17 kills hitting a .306 compared to the Rockets 10 kills hitting a .129.
The Orange and Brown came out of the locker room for game three fired up and won the first point of game three off of a Corey Domek kill. Just like game two the Falcons took an early 3-0 lead and the Rockets answer back right away with a three point run the difference in game three was the Falcons came back with a seven point run taking 10-3 lead. The Falcons took their biggest lead of the night with a 13 point lead over the Rockets, 11-24. The Rockets tried to come back putting together a five point run and coming within eight of the Falcons but the Falcons were too much for the Rockets putting up back-to-back double blocks from Halm and Meghan Mohr, winning game three 30-18. For the second game in a row the Falcons out hit the Rockets with 16 kills hitting a .370 keeping the Rockets to a mere seven kills hitting a -.032.
Falcons started off game four just how they end game three with a double block from Halm and Mohr once again. The Falcons jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with a six point run, which included three straight aces from Sam Fish. With the Falcons up by seven, 13-6 the Rockets fought back putting together a five point run to come within two of the Falcons, 13-11. The Falcons answered right back stringing together four points to extend their lead once again 17-11. The Falcons finished off Rockets in game four with an eight point run and a game winning kill from Stephanie Swiger, 30-17. The Falcons scored 11 of the last 15 points in game four. The Falcons once again kept the Rockets under wraps only allowing them to hit a .136 compared to the Falcons .355 in game four.
Once the Falcons' offense got started they couldn't be stopped ending the night with four players in double digits in kills. Leading the way for the Falcons was Swiger with 19 kills and only three errors hitting a .500. Also in double digits were Domek with 14 kills, Mohr with 12 kills, and Halm with 10 kills. Fish distributed the ball on offense collecting 54 assists for the night.
Chelsey Meek recorded 22 digs against the Rockets, bringing her career total to 1,465 career digs. Meek's is now tied with former teammate Chrissy Gothke as the number two players in BGSU record books for career digs. Also in double digits on defense for the Falcons was Elizabeth Simon with 12 digs.
Head Coach Denise Van De Walle and the Falcons will continue their MAC West Division road trip when they take on Van De Walle's alma mater, Ball State tomorrow night (Oct. 20) in Muncie, Ind. at 7:00 p.m.
