BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Each week, Bowling Green State University Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Greg Christopher answers a few of the many questions that have been submitted to BGSUFalcons.com. Here is the latest installment ...
Q: I was disappointed with our student attendance at the first two home football games. Where do we stand on student attendance and how does it get better in the future?
Kevin in Toledo
A: Students are an important part of the atmosphere at BGSU sporting events and we are working on several fronts to make sure they're in the stands cheering for their teams. In our first two home football games, we averaged 4,046 students per game. While there is still room for improvement, the numbers represent a step in the right direction. Last year, we averaged 2,889 students per football game and in 2005 the average was 3,518. The 2002 through 2004 seasons all saw student attendance top 5,000 per game. As with anything, there is no single answer - there are several factors related to student attendance at sporting events. Almost 40 percent of the students leave Bowling Green on a typical weekend, which reduces the student population on campus. Brian Delehoy and our marketing team have done a nice job of plugging into the various student groups, residence halls and Greek organizations in an effort to raise awareness and spirit on campus. Coaches and student-athletes have also been out to group meetings and events. Of course, winning makes a big difference and good weather is a huge factor as well!
Q: Is there a reason why Falcon Vision doesn't show replays of the challenged calls? Fans enjoy getting a second look at those plays.
Bill in Toledo
A: While I don't believe there is any written MAC policy, the agreement among Athletic Directors has been not to show potential controversial calls on in-stadium video boards. Other replays can be shown at regular speed one time after the play. I'm not sure how all conferences handle replays, but the MAC's policy is similar to what was done in the Big Ten.
