BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team returns to action this weekend, heading down I-75 for the Queen City Invitational. The eight-team, three-day event, hosted by the University of Cincinnati, begins Friday (Oct. 5) at the Queen City Racquet Club.
"We have been practicing hard, and it has been three weeks since our last tournament," said Falcon head coach Penny Dean. "We are ready to compete against some other schools."
Action is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. each day. In addition to the Falcons and the host Bearcats, other schools scheduled to compete include Akron, Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Kennesaw State, Miami and Xavier.
The Falcons' lone action so far this season came on Sept. 15-16 at the BGSU Invitational. The Falcons went a combined 26-9 that weekend. BGSU singles competitors were 16-7 overall, while the Falcon doubles teams were an aggregate 10-2 in the two days. All four of BGSU's doubles teams had records of 2-1 or 3-0.
Freshman Christine Chiricosta and junior Stefanie Menoff each won flight titles in both singles and doubles at that tournament. Chiricosta, in her first weekend of collegiate action, was the champion at the second singles flight, while teaming with sophomore Samantha Kintzel for a crown at the second doubles flight.
Menoff opened her season by winning the seventh flight, while combining with soph Katia Babina to win the fourth-flight doubles title.
The Queen City Invitational marks the Falcons' first road trip of the year, and is one of just three fall weekends in which the team is in action.
"We are looking forward to seeing where we stack up against a couple teams in the MAC that we haven't yet seen," said Dean. "Miami and Ball State always seem to be two of the teams battling with us for positioning in the conference race."
The Falcons faced Akron in the BGSU Invitational, but have not yet matched up with players from Miami or BSU this season.
"We are also looking forward to seeing how we match up against the other teams in this weekend's tournament," said Dean. "It should also be a good weekend for team bonding, as we make our first road trip of the year and will spend the bulk of four days together."
Following the Queen City Invitational, the Falcons will have just one remaining weekend of fall action. Selected team members will head to the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., with qualifying rounds of that tourney set for Oct. 18-19 and the main draw running through Oct. 23. The remainder of the team will head to Muncie, Ind., for that weekend's Ball State Fall Invitational.
